About the Saarbrücken Old Town Festival
The Altstadtfest is Saarland's biggest city festival and the one weekend of the year when the old quarter of Saarbrücken turns into one long open-air party. Entry is free, music runs on several stages, and the streets fill with stalls selling drinks and snacks. It is not a polished tourist show but a local festival that welcomes visitors, which is exactly why it works for a short city break in the far southwest of Germany.
In our data the 2028 edition runs from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July, so it straddles the end of June and the start of July.
Dates in 2028: an estimate, not an announcement
The organiser has not yet announced the 2028 dates, so what you see here is an estimate based on earlier years. The festival is usually held on the first weekend of July. In 2028 the 1st of July is a Saturday, which makes Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July the natural window.
Because the weekend sits across a month boundary, double-check the exact days in the official programme before you book anything non-refundable. The city's official site, saarbruecken.de, is the place to look, and it is worth checking again a few weeks before the trip in case the festival shifts by a week.
What to see and do
The festival happens around the St. Johann old town on the right bank of the Saar. You wander between stages, pick a spot with a drink, and move on when the music changes. Daytime visitors can combine it with the baroque Ludwigskirche, a stroll beside the river and the castle area.
If you arrive early on Friday, use the time for a trip to the Völklinger Hütte, the former ironworks that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and a short ride from the city. Cross-border day trips to Lorraine in France are easy too, since the border is only a few kilometres away.
Food and drink
Try the regional classics: Schwenker from the swinging grill, Lyoner sausage, Dibbelabbes and Gefillde. Saarland cooking has a French accent, so you may also find crêpes or tarts. As at all festivals, the exact range depends on the stalls, so look around before choosing. Vegetarian options are likely to be thinner than meat, so if that matters, plan a restaurant meal in town as a backup.
Getting there and where to stay
Saarbrücken's main station is the hub, with regional trains in all directions and onward links into France. From there the old town is reachable on foot or by tram. If you come by car, use a car park outside the centre rather than hunting for a space near the stages.
Hotels in the centre fill up on festival weekends, and a date at the turn of June and July also catches early summer travellers. Booking a few weeks ahead with a flexible rate is sensible, especially while the date is still unconfirmed.
Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2028
In 2028, Friday 30 June is a working day in Saarland, and the festival weekend has no public holiday attached. The closest holidays are Corpus Christi on Thursday 15 June, which creates the bridge day Friday 16 June two weeks earlier, and Assumption Day on Tuesday 15 August, where Monday 14 August is the bridge day. Neither helps with the festival itself.
A trip from Friday to Sunday costs one vacation day if you want to be there for the whole of Friday evening, and none if you leave work on time and travel afterwards. If you add Monday 3 July you use two days for a four-day break. As a separate idea, the August holiday gives four days off for one vacation day, so the two trips can be spread through the summer.
Tips and who it suits
This festival suits friends, couples and families who enjoy a relaxed street party. Bring some cash, comfortable shoes and a light rain jacket, since summer showers happen. Public transport is the easiest way to move around in the evening. Check the organiser's announcement for the confirmed dates before you commit to non-refundable travel.
