What the Bremen Freimarkt is

The Bremer Freimarkt is the big autumn funfair of the Hanseatic city, one of the oldest folk festivals in Germany and a fixture of the local calendar. It is held on the Bürgerweide, the fairground right behind the main station, with rides, stalls, beer tents and food of every kind. Locals treat it as a fifth season of the year, and visitors from northern Germany come for it too.

For 2027 our data lists a window from Friday 15 October to Sunday 31 October, seventeen days.

Dates in 2027 and how they are estimated

The Freimarkt traditionally runs for 17 days, from a Friday in October to the Sunday of the second week after. The 2027 dates have not been published, so the window follows the pattern of previous years. If the opening Friday is 15 October, the final Sunday is 31 October.

Treat the dates as provisional. The official site, freimarkt.de, publishes the confirmed schedule, opening hours and special days. Wait for that before booking anything you cannot cancel.

Character of the festival and what to do

The Freimarkt dates back to a medieval market privilege; the long history is part of its self-image, and a historic Bremen market is often cited as the starting point. Today it is a modern funfair with large rides, a Ferris wheel, game booths and an evening atmosphere with lights over the fairground. Fireworks and special days with discounts are part of the programme in many years, though the details vary and should be checked.

Beyond the fair, Bremen has a compact old town: the town hall and the Roland statue are UNESCO World Heritage, the Böttcherstraße is a lane of brick Expressionist buildings, and the Schnoor quarter offers narrow lanes and small shops. The Bremen Town Musicians statue by the town hall is a classic photo stop.

Food and drink

Expect fairground classics: roasted almonds, Lebkuchenherzen, Schmalzkuchen, Bratwurst, Fischbrötchen and sweet snacks. Bremen cooking adds local touches such as Knipp, Kohl und Pinkel in the colder months and Bremer Klaben, a fruit loaf. Beer is a big part of the fair, and tents serve both local and regional brands. Public transport is the sensible way home.

Getting there and where to stay

The fairground is a few minutes from Bremen Hauptbahnhof on foot or by tram, which makes arriving by train very convenient. Bremen also has an airport connected to the centre by tram, and the A1 and A27 reach the city. Parking near the Bürgerweide is limited during the fair.

Hotels near the station and in the old town are the most convenient, but they can fill during the fair. Because the festival runs for more than two weeks, there is flexibility in choosing a quieter midweek stay at lower demand.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027

In 2027 the Freimarkt closes on Sunday 31 October, which is also Reformation Day, a public holiday in Bremen. Because it falls on a Sunday it gives no extra day off. German Unity Day, 3 October, is a Sunday too, and Monday 1 November, All Saints, is not a holiday in Bremen.

A Friday to Sunday visit, 15 to 17 October for the opening weekend or 29 to 31 October for the closing weekend, costs one vacation day or none. A full-week stay from Monday 18 to Friday 22 October needs five vacation days and gives you nine days from Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 October. A quieter plan is a midweek visit on a single vacation day combined with a weekend. Check the autumn school holiday dates of your own state, as they affect prices and crowds in Bremen.

Tips and who it suits

The fair suits families by day and groups of friends in the evening. Bring a card and some cash, wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy if it rains and arrive early in the day if you want shorter queues at the rides. Confirm the final dates on the organiser's site once they are published.
