Düsseldorf Carnival

Rule-based. This date is computed from a known, fixed calendar rule, not announced by anyone, but the rule itself isn't in doubt.

What the Düsseldorf carnival week is

Düsseldorf's carnival week centres on its own long-running Rosenmontag parade through the city centre, one of three major Rose Monday parades in the Rhineland alongside Cologne and Mainz. The planner shows the 2026 window from Thursday 12 February to Wednesday 18 February, which means it runs from Weiberfastnacht through to Ash Wednesday, a day longer than the Cologne entry.

The planner lists this edition as rule-based. The dates come from the carnival calendar rule tied to Easter, not from a confirmed announcement by the organisers, so check the Düsseldorf carnival committee before you plan travel or accommodation.

Dates and how they are set

Easter Sunday in 2026 is 5 April. Rosenmontag lies 48 days before, so the main parade falls on Monday 16 February. Weiberfastnacht is the Thursday before (12 February), and Ash Wednesday on 18 February closes the season, which is why the listed range stretches to the Wednesday.

Because all three Rhineland parades fall on the same Monday, you must choose one of them. The event data points out exactly this constraint. If your priority is the parade itself, check the official timetable for the start time and route, since those are announced by the organisers and may vary from year to year.

Character, sights and food

Düsseldorf's carnival has a reputation for satirical floats that comment on politics and public life, mixed with the usual bands, costumes and thrown sweets. On Weiberfastnacht the old town, the Altstadt with its many pubs, sees street celebrations. The area around the Rhine promenade and the Rathaus tends to be busy on parade day.

The local drink is Altbier, a dark top-fermented beer served in small glasses, and many pubs in the Altstadt brew their own. Typical food includes Rheinischer Sauerbraten, Mettbrötchen and Currywurst. The Königsallee and the Rhine promenade provide a calmer break from the crowds, though not on the main parade day.

Getting there and where to stay

Düsseldorf's main station has fast connections across Nordrhein-Westfalen and beyond, and the airport has its own station. The Altstadt is a short walk or tram ride from the station on ordinary days, but road closures on parade day can change the routes.

Accommodation tends to be pricey and booked up in carnival week. Because Cologne, Neuss, Duisburg and Essen are only a short train ride away, some visitors stay in a neighbouring city and commute. Compare prices early and check that the cancellation terms suit your plans, especially since the dates are not yet confirmed by the organiser.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2026

Rosenmontag is not a public holiday in Nordrhein-Westfalen, although many people take the day off or their employer closes. If you want to attend the parade only, one vacation day on Monday 16 February gives a three-day weekend from Saturday 14 February to Monday 16 February.

For the longer week, Thursday 12, Friday 13, Monday 16, Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 February are working days, so the full range would cost five vacation days. Taking just the Thursday and Friday adds a long weekend for two days. No statutory holiday sits near these dates: the next ones are Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April.

Remember that the rule shifts the carnival from year to year; in 2027 Rosenmontag is on 8 February. If you tend to plan far ahead, wait for the committee's confirmed programme before paying for non-refundable travel.

Tips and who it suits

The week suits people who enjoy political satire, pubs and costumed street parties. It can be a good alternative to Cologne if you want a slightly smaller crowd, though parade day is still extremely busy.

Travel by train, wear a costume and keep valuables close. Verify route, start time and any safety rules with the official organisers, because the planner's dates for this edition are rule-based.
