What the Elbhangfest is

The Elbhangfest is an arts, music and courtyard festival along the Elbe slopes in Dresden, running between Loschwitz and Pillnitz. Residents open courtyards, gardens, galleries and workshops, and stages and stalls fill the riverside villages. In 2026 it was held for the 33rd time, so a 2027 edition would be its 34th if the numbering continues.

It is a neighbourhood festival at heart, which is part of the charm: you are walking through living streets rather than a closed-off fairground.

Date in 2027 and why it is estimated

The planner shows Friday 25 June to Sunday 27 June 2027 and marks the date as estimated. The festival traditionally falls on the last weekend of June, and that is the basis of the projection. The 2027 date has not yet been officially confirmed, and the organiser can set it differently. Before you book a hotel or take leave, check the organiser's website. Programme details such as stages and parades also appear late.

If the tradition holds, the last weekend in June 2027 is exactly 25 to 27 June.

History and character

The slopes along the Elbe are among the best-known residential areas of Dresden, with villas, vineyards and old village centres such as Loschwitz and Pillnitz. The festival uses this setting for music of many styles, theatre, art and food. The programme is varied, from classical concerts to folk, jazz and street theatre.

The mood is relaxed, friendly and a little artistic. It suits slow wandering, with stops at stages and courtyards rather than a fixed itinerary.

What to see, do and eat

Start at Loschwitz near the Blaues Wunder bridge and use the old Standseilbahn or Schwebebahn cable railways, then walk along the Elbe towards Pillnitz and its palace. Local Saxon wine is part of the Elbe slope landscape, so a glass in a courtyard is a good fit. Stalls offer Bratwurst, cake and regional dishes, and cafes along the way serve Eierschecke.

Bring sun protection and comfortable shoes, as distances and hills add up, and check whether the festival runs shuttle or ferry services between sections.

Getting there and where to stay

From Dresden Hauptbahnhof, trams and buses reach Loschwitz, and the tram line along the river runs on to Pillnitz. Cars are best left outside, since streets are narrow and often restricted during the festival. The Elbe cycle path makes it an easy bike trip as well.

Stay in the Neustadt or the Loschwitz area, and book early, as summer weekends are popular. Reserve free-cancellation rooms until the festival date is confirmed.

Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027

No Saxon public holiday falls in late June 2027: Whit Monday was 17 May and Corpus Christi, a holiday only in certain Saxon communities, 27 May. The festival weekend Friday to Sunday therefore costs one vacation day, Friday 25 June, if you want to join the opening on Friday evening, or none if you come on Saturday.

School summer holidays in Saxony may begin soon afterwards, and the Saxon education ministry publishes the exact dates, which affect travel costs and crowds. Check them when planning a longer stay.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits couples, families and anyone who likes slow, cultural weekends in a green setting. Arrive early in the day, use public transport, and carry water. Because the date is still unconfirmed, wait for the organiser's announcement before making non-refundable plans.
