The Erfurt Christmas Market at a glance

The Erfurt Christmas Market is often named among the most atmospheric Advent markets in Germany. The event data describes it as set against the backdrop of the cathedral and the Severikirche, the two churches that stand side by side on the Domberg above the Domplatz. The stalls spread through the medieval centre of the Thuringian state capital, with wooden huts, a large Christmas tree and a stage programme in the evenings.

This page is about the 2027 season. Its dates are an estimate drawn from the pattern of earlier years and from the city tourism office's published materials, not an organiser's final schedule.

Dates for 2027 and why they are estimated

The planner shows Tuesday 23 November to Wednesday 22 December 2027, about four weeks. The status is estimated: no confirmed opening ceremony has been announced, so the first and last day could shift. For orientation, the Sunday of the dead falls on 21 November in 2027 and the first Advent Sunday is 28 November, so the estimated opening lies shortly before Advent.

The end on 22 December suggests the market closes before the Christmas holidays begin. Because Christmas Eve is a Friday in 2027, do not assume you can visit on 24 December. Always confirm opening hours with the Erfurt tourism office, the first source for the final schedule.

History and character of the old town setting

Erfurt has one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Germany. Its Krämerbrücke is a bridge lined with half-timbered houses that still carry shops and studios, and the Alte Synagoge and the medieval Jewish heritage of the city have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Martin Luther studied at Erfurt's university and lived in the Augustinian monastery.

At Advent the Domplatz is one of the largest squares in Germany, and the stairs up to the cathedral and the Severikirche turn into a natural grandstand. The mood is traditional, with Christmas lights, wooden stalls and the old churches overhead.

What to eat, see and do

The Thuringian bratwurst is the obvious place to start, ideally grilled over charcoal and served in a roll with mustard. Other regional dishes include Thuringian dumplings and, in the sweet column, Stollen and gingerbread. Mulled wine is available in local variants, so look at the stall boards rather than assuming.

Besides the market itself, walk across the Krämerbrücke, climb the steps up to the cathedral, see the Petersberg citadel from outside and visit the Anger shopping street. If you stay a second day, Weimar and Gotha are short train rides away and both have their own Advent offerings.

Public holidays and bridge days in Thuringia, 2027

Four weekends fall inside the estimated season: 27 and 28 November, 4 and 5 December, 11 and 12 December, and 18 and 19 December. The market also begins and ends in the middle of the week, so a weekend trip costs no vacation days, and a long weekend with Friday off costs one.

There is no public holiday in Thuringia during the estimated run. Christmas Day on 25 December and Boxing Day on 26 December fall on a Saturday and a Sunday in 2027, so they give no extra day off, and the market is closed by then anyway. Reformation Day, 31 October, is a Sunday this year. If you want a longer visit before Christmas, taking Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 December costs three vacation days and ends exactly on the closing day.

Tips and who it suits

This market suits couples, families and anyone who wants a traditional setting with real historic architecture around it. Weekday visits are calmer; Saturday evenings and the weekend before Christmas are the busiest.

Arrive by train, as the station is a short walk from the old town, and reserve a room as soon as the dates are confirmed because the central hotels are small in number. Wear shoes with grip, since cobbles and steps can be slippery in winter.
