Erfurt's Advent market in 2028
Every winter Erfurt turns the area between the Domplatz and the old town's lanes into a Christmas market that many travel guides count among the most atmospheric in Germany. The event data places it in front of the cathedral and the Severikirche, the two churches that crown the Domberg. The 2028 season is described here on the basis of a forecast, because the organisers have not yet published a programme for that year.
If you are comparing Christmas markets for 2028, treat this entry as a starting point. Dates and stage acts will be set closer to the time, and the Erfurt tourism office is the place to confirm them.
Forecast dates and how to read them
The planner shows Tuesday 28 November to Friday 22 December 2028, a little under four weeks. The status is estimated. Compared with 2027, the opening falls five days later in the calendar, which fits the later first Advent Sunday on 3 December 2028, and the Sunday of the dead on 26 November comes two days before the forecast opening.
The market is shown closing on a Friday, 22 December, with the weekend of 23 and 24 December still ahead. Whether it actually closes then, or runs into the last weekend, is the type of detail that only the organiser can settle, so do not book a trip for the final days without confirmation.
A medieval city with Reformation roots
Erfurt lay on important trade routes in the Middle Ages, which explains the wealth visible in its churches and merchant houses. Its university, founded in the late fourteenth century, was where Martin Luther studied, and the Augustinian monastery where he lived is open to visitors. The Krämerbrücke, lined with half-timbered houses, and the medieval Jewish heritage around the Alte Synagoge are the best-known monuments.
At Christmas the narrow lanes help the atmosphere: the sound of voices carries between the houses, and the lit towers of the Domberg are visible from many corners of the old town. It feels more like a walk through a stage set than a trade fair.
Food, drink and what else to do
Thuringian specialities define the food: the bratwurst grilled over charcoal, dumplings with roast meat, and sweet baked goods. Hot drinks range from mulled wine to non-alcoholic punch. As always, the exact list of vendors changes from year to year, so rely on the posted stall boards on site.
Make time for the Egapark, if the weather allows an outdoor stroll, the Petersberg citadel and the shopping streets between the Anger and the Fischmarkt. Weimar, Gotha and Eisenach with its Wartburg can all be reached by regional train for a day trip.
Public holidays and bridge days in Thuringia, 2028
The forecast run contains the weekends of 2 and 3 December, 9 and 10 December, and 16 and 17 December. It begins on a Tuesday and ends on a Friday. A weekend visit costs no vacation days, and a Friday plus weekend costs one.
Christmas falls differently than in 2027. Christmas Eve, 24 December, is a Sunday; Christmas Day is Monday 25 December and Boxing Day is Tuesday 26 December. That is not a bridge for this market, since it closes by 22 December, but it does mean that anyone planning a Christmas week in Thuringia gets two paid holidays on weekdays. Reformation Day is Tuesday 31 October 2028, well before the market. For a mid-week market visit, taking Wednesday 20 to Friday 22 December uses three vacation days and ends on the forecast closing day.
Tips and who it suits
Choose Erfurt if you value historic scenery, a market that is easy to cover on foot and the chance to combine Advent with sightseeing. It suits couples, small groups and families with children old enough to cope with crowds.
Because dates are not final, avoid non-refundable tickets until the city confirms them. Bring warm layers, gloves and a bag for souvenirs, and allow time at the weekend for queues at the most popular stalls.
