What the Frankfurt Book Fair is
The Frankfurter Buchmesse is widely regarded as the largest book fair in the world, a place where publishers, authors, agents, translators and rights buyers meet to trade titles and rights across languages. For the book industry it is the most important appointment of the autumn. For the reading public it is also a chance to browse halls full of new releases, meet authors and attend readings.
Frankfurt has hosted a book fair for centuries, and the modern fair has run since the years after the Second World War, with the exhibition grounds in the west of the city as its home.
Dates for 2026: already under way
The 2026 fair runs from Wednesday 7 October to Sunday 11 October 2026, and the status is confirmed. The first two days, Wednesday and Thursday, are reserved for trade visitors. The public days are Friday to Sunday, 9 to 11 October. At the time this page was checked, the fair had already begun, so a reader looking for a last-minute trip should think about the coming weekend rather than the opening.
Tickets for the public days are normally sold through the official website, and day tickets for weekends can sell out or become more expensive on the day. Check the fair's own pages for current prices and opening hours rather than relying on older figures.
Character of the fair
The atmosphere changes from day to day. The trade days are about meetings, appointments and negotiations, with the halls filled with suits and lanyards. At the weekend, the mood turns to readers, families and many visitors in costume, because the fair has a lively fan and comics culture. Authors appear on stages and at signing tables, and every year a guest country presents its literature with a special pavilion and a programme in the city.
Large parts of the fair are international, so you will hear many languages in the halls, and English is widely used at stands.
What to see, do and eat
Plan your route in advance, because the grounds are large and the halls are numbered by theme. Use the fair's app or floor plan to find the publishers and events you care about, and keep time for one or two readings. Outside the halls, Frankfurt invites a walk: the reconstructed Römerberg, the Main riverbank with the museum embankment, and the skyline seen from the bridges.
For food, try the local classics: Grüne Soße with potatoes and egg, Handkäs mit Musik, and apple wine in the traditional taverns of Sachsenhausen. On the grounds themselves, expect the usual fair catering with queues at lunchtime.
Getting there and where to stay
The fairground is served by the U4 underground at Festhalle/Messe and by several tram and S-Bahn connections from the main station, so a car is not needed. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is a major hub, and Frankfurt airport is connected by S-Bahn in about fifteen minutes.
Hotel prices in Frankfurt rise sharply during the book fair and other large trade events, and rooms in the city can be scarce at short notice. Look at Offenbach, Darmstadt, Mainz or Wiesbaden, which are reached by train in half an hour or less.
Public holidays and vacation days in 2026
No statutory public holiday in Hessen falls in the fair week: German Unity Day on 3 October was a Saturday this year and is already past. Visiting the three public days from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October costs one vacation day, Friday 9 October, since the weekend is free. A visit to the trade days would cost Wednesday and Thursday, but it requires trade registration. Hessen's autumn school holidays may overlap with the fair period, so check the official school calendar to judge crowds on trains.
The fair suits readers, students of literature, families with older children and the book trade. Wear comfortable shoes for long distances between halls, and buy a ticket online if possible.
