What the Frankfurt Book Fair is

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world's largest book fair, held every autumn at the Messe Frankfurt exhibition grounds. For most of the week it is a trade event for publishers, agents, rights buyers and booksellers. For the general public the doors open on the final two days, which in 2027 are Saturday 9 October and Sunday 10 October, with the whole fair running from Wednesday 6 October to Sunday 10 October.

The planner lists this edition as confirmed. According to the event data, Chile is the guest of honour country in 2027, which usually means a themed pavilion, readings by authors from that country and a cultural programme in the city.

Dates and how they are set

The fair is held in the first half of October, normally from a Wednesday to a Sunday. In 2027 that gives five days, from Wednesday 6 October. The dates are fixed by the Frankfurter Buchmesse well in advance, which is why this edition can be marked as confirmed rather than estimated.

The split between trade days and public days matters for planning. Trade visitors have the first days to themselves, while ordinary ticket holders are admitted only on the weekend. If you want to see the fair at its quietest, the trade-only days are not an option, so the weekend is the realistic choice, and you should expect it to be busy. Check the organiser's site for ticket types and entry times.

Character, what to see and what to eat

On public days the halls fill with readers, cosplayers, families and writers. Publishers present new titles, authors give readings and signings, and some halls focus on comics, children's books or self-publishing. Pavilions devoted to the guest country add a regional flavour. Wear comfortable shoes, because the halls are large and the walking distances add up quickly.

Outside the fair, Frankfurt offers its own food culture. Try Apfelwein (apple wine) with Handkäs mit Musik or a Frankfurter Grüne Soße with potatoes and egg in an old-town tavern in Sachsenhausen. The Museumsufer along the Main is a good option if you want an afternoon away from the crowds, and the skyline walk along the river works well in autumn light.

Getting there and where to stay

Frankfurt is one of Germany's best-connected cities. The airport has its own long-distance railway station, and the Hauptbahnhof is a short ride from the fairgrounds, which are served by the U-Bahn and by trams. Using public transport on fair days is much easier than trying to park nearby.

Hotel prices in Frankfurt rise sharply during big fairs, and the Book Fair is among the busiest periods of the year. If you only attend on the weekend, consider staying in a neighbouring town such as Offenbach, Darmstadt, Mainz or Wiesbaden and commuting by S-Bahn or regional train. Book early, and read the cancellation terms before committing.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027

The 2027 public days are Saturday and Sunday, so visiting costs no vacation days at all. If you want to arrive on Friday 8 October and spend a leisurely weekend, you would take one day. To attend one trade-oriented day, Wednesday to Friday would cost three.

In Hessen there is no public holiday inside the fair week. The nearest one is German Unity Day, 3 October, which falls on a Sunday in 2027, so there is no replacement day off on Monday. Because of that, the only bridge opportunity near the fair is not a holiday at all but the regular weekend. Looking further ahead, Hessen's next holidays are Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December and Boxing Day on Sunday 26 December 2027, both on weekends, so they give no extra days off.

A sensible plan for a family is to travel on Friday afternoon, use the Saturday for the fair and the Sunday for the city or the Main riverside. That plan takes zero or one vacation day, depending on whether you can leave early on Friday.

Tips and who it suits

The fair suits book lovers, aspiring writers, students of publishing and families with older children. It is less suitable if you dislike crowds, since the Saturday is typically the busiest public day. Buy tickets online ahead of time, check bag rules at the entrance and plan your route through the halls using the official map.

Programme details, ticket prices and opening hours are set by the organiser and can change, so confirm them on the official site before you book travel.
