What the Schlossfestspiele are

The Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele are the summer festival of open-air theatre, opera and musicals staged in and around Heidelberg Castle. Few settings in Germany combine a stage with such a famous ruin: the red sandstone castle above the Neckar and the old town gives an evening of theatre a backdrop that no set designer could build. The festival runs across the summer and attracts both locals and visitors who combine culture with a city break.

For 2027 the announced productions are Robin Hood, Das Sparschwein and Der Freischütz, which together cover family entertainment, comedy and a classic of German romantic opera.

Dates for 2027

The 2027 festival period is listed from Sunday 6 June to Sunday 1 August 2027, and the status is confirmed. Ticket sales are announced to begin on 15 January 2027, so that is the date to mark if you want good seats for the most popular evenings. Individual performance dates sit inside this window and are published in the programme, so check the official festival website for the evening you want.

Because open-air performances depend on weather, organisers usually have rules for rain and cancellations; read those conditions when you buy a ticket rather than assuming a refund.

History and character

Heidelberg is the oldest university town in Germany, and its castle has been a romantic ruin since the destruction of the seventeenth century. That ruin has inspired poets and painters for generations, and staging theatre there continues that tradition. The festival has a reputation for mixing accessible productions with well known repertoire, and the setting carries part of the experience: the audience sits in the castle courtyard in the long light of a summer evening.

Performances take place in the evening, so an overnight stay is sensible if you do not live nearby.

What to see, do and eat

Combine the evening with a day in the city. Walk through the castle gardens and see the Great Barrel in the cellar, cross the Old Bridge, stroll along the Hauptstraße, the long pedestrian street of the old town, and climb the Philosophenweg on the north bank of the Neckar for the best view of the castle. The Heidelberg Studentenkuss, a chocolate specialty, makes a traditional gift.

Restaurants in the old town offer everything from Kurpfalz dishes to international cuisine, and beer gardens along the Neckar are ideal before the curtain goes up.

Getting there and where to stay

Heidelberg is well connected by ICE and regional trains from Frankfurt, Mannheim and Stuttgart, and Frankfurt airport is about an hour away by train. The castle can be reached on foot via the Kornmarkt, or by the funicular railway that serves the Königstuhl and the castle. Driving into the old town on a summer evening is not recommended, as parking is scarce.

Hotels in Heidelberg are in demand in summer, particularly at weekends, so book early once you have your ticket. Mannheim, Schwetzingen or Speyer are possible alternatives with train connections.

Public holidays and vacation days in 2027

The run begins on a Sunday and ends on a Sunday, so almost every performance weekend can be used with no vacation days at all. In Baden-Württemberg the last public holidays before the festival are Whit Monday on 17 May and Corpus Christi on 27 May, both before the opening, and no statutory holiday falls inside the window, so there is no bridge day to plan around. Midweek performances would require a vacation day or a late start of work. Summer school holidays in the state typically begin in late July, so the last weeks of the festival may overlap with the main holiday season.

The festival suits couples, groups of friends and families, depending on the production. Bring a layer for the evening, arrive early to avoid queues on the castle path, and confirm programme and ticket rules on the official website.
