Christmas Eve

24 December 2027
Nationwide

Rule-based. This date is computed from a known, fixed calendar rule, not announced by anyone, but the rule itself isn't in doubt.

Christmas Eve falls on a Friday in 2027. It is not a public holiday, but together with the two Christmas holidays on Saturday and Sunday it makes for a natural long weekend.

What Christmas Eve means in Germany

Christmas Eve, Heiligabend, is the evening of 24 December and for most households in Germany the emotional centre of the whole Christmas season. Gifts are traditionally exchanged on this evening rather than on the morning of Christmas Day, a moment usually called the Bescherung. Many families go to church beforehand, to a children's service in the afternoon or a Christvesper or Christmette later on, and then sit down to a quiet meal at home.

In 2027 the day falls on a Friday. It is not a statutory public holiday anywhere in Germany, yet in practice it behaves like a half holiday: many offices close or run on a skeleton staff, and shops, supermarkets and post offices shut around midday.

Date and how it is set

There is nothing to negotiate here. The date is fixed in the calendar and does not move from year to year, only its weekday changes. This planner marks the entry as rule-based, which means the date comes from the calendar rule and not from an organiser's announcement. What is not fixed is your own situation: whether your employer treats 24 December 2027 as a normal working day, a free day or a half day depends on your contract, a works agreement or a collective agreement. Ask HR before you plan around it, and do not assume that a free afternoon in a previous year will repeat.

Opening hours are also set locally. Supermarkets usually close early, often around 14:00, but the exact time differs by chain and town, so check the individual shop.

Customs, character and food

The character of the evening is quiet and domestic. Typical dishes vary strongly by region and family: potato salad with sausages is a widespread easy option, while others serve carp, goose or a fish dish. In Saxony and the wider east, the Erzgebirge tradition of candle arches and wooden figures is part of many living rooms. Christmas markets generally close before or on this day, so the evening itself is not a market occasion.

If you are visiting rather than hosting, expect an atmosphere that is more intimate than lively. Church services are the main public events, and in larger towns they can be crowded, so arriving early is sensible.

Travel and accommodation around the date

Travel on 23 and 24 December is busy. Trains fill up, motorways see heavy traffic in the early afternoon, and local public transport usually runs a reduced timetable on the evening of the 24th that resembles a Sunday. Book rail seats early and have a backup plan. Restaurants are mostly closed or only serve pre-booked dinners that evening, so if you are staying in a hotel, ask about a Christmas Eve menu when you book.

Hotels in tourist cities often have good availability on the night of the 24th but limited dining, so being flexible about meals matters more than the room.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027

The calendar is rather unkind this year. Christmas Eve is a Friday, the first Christmas Day is Saturday 25 December and the second is Sunday 26 December, so neither holiday takes a weekday away. New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday as well. That means no extra public holidays to build on.

If your employer treats 24 December as a normal working day, a Friday off costs one vacation day and gives you a three-day weekend. To stretch it, take Monday 27 to Friday 31 December: that is five more vacation days, and six in total, for a block running from Friday 24 December to Sunday 2 January 2028, ten days off in a row. Monday 3 January is the first working day. Many companies shut between the years, which may reduce the days you need to claim, so check your company calendar before booking.

Tips and who it suits

Christmas Eve suits families, couples who want a slow, candlelit evening, and anyone who values tradition over entertainment. It is less suited to travellers who want events, as nearly everything public winds down by the afternoon.

A few practical tips: buy groceries and gifts by the 23rd, charge your phone before long train rides, and check the schedule of local buses and trams. If you will be alone, many churches and community groups host open Christmas Eve gatherings, and these are often warmly inclusive. Because this entry is rule-based, confirm employer closures and shop hours yourself rather than relying on the planner.
