Christmas Eve 2028 at a glance
Christmas Eve, Heiligabend, is the evening of 24 December, when German families traditionally open their presents, attend a church service and share a quiet meal. In 2028 it takes on a special shape: it falls on a Sunday, and that Sunday is also the fourth Sunday of Advent. The fourth candle on the wreath is lit in the morning, and by evening the Christmas season proper begins.
Because it lands on a Sunday, shops would be closed anyway, so the usual rush to finish errands before the half-day closure moves forward to Saturday 23 December. Expect a very busy Saturday in town centres and supermarkets.
Date and status
The date is fixed by the calendar, not set by an organiser, which is why this planner lists it as rule-based. Nothing needs to be confirmed about the day itself. What can vary is the practical side: public transport timetables, church service times and any employer arrangements. A Sunday timetable usually applies on the 24th and 25th, but the transport operator in your region decides the details and may add or drop services.
Church service times for the evening are announced by individual parishes in the weeks before Advent. Check your local parish page or the posted notice at the church.
Character, customs and food
The day is domestic and quiet. Families light candles, sing carols or listen to them, and many go to the Christvesper in the late afternoon or the Christmette at night. Food is regional and personal: some serve potato salad and sausages, some carp or goose, some a simple fish dish. In Saxony and Thuringia, candle arches and wooden pyramids from the Erzgebirge tradition are common decoration.
Christmas markets have ended by now in nearly every town, so this is not a day for strolling among stalls. For a market visit, plan your trip for earlier in December.
Getting there and staying
The heaviest travel day is not the 24th itself but Friday 22 and Saturday 23 December, when people head home. Trains are full and long-distance seat reservations are worth making early. On Sunday the 24th public transport thins out, and by the evening it is limited. Plan your arrival for the day before or earlier on the 24th.
Hotels are generally easy to find on Christmas Eve itself, but restaurants may be closed or offering a set menu that needs booking. If you travel, ask your host or hotel about food that evening so you are not left searching for an open kitchen.
Public holidays and bridge days around 2028
This year the calendar works in your favour. Christmas Eve is Sunday 24 December, the first Christmas Day is Monday 25 December and the second Tuesday 26 December. Both are public holidays in every state. New Year's Day 2029 is a Monday, also a holiday.
That sets up a very efficient block. Take Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 December, three vacation days, and you are off from Saturday 23 December to Monday 1 January 2029, ten days in a row. Even two days, say Thursday 28 and Friday 29, still give you Saturday 23 to Tuesday 26 December off, one working day on Wednesday 27, and then Thursday to Monday 1 January off again. Because many companies close between the years, check whether your employer already gives you some of these days free. Tuesday 2 January 2029 is the first normal working day.
Tips and who it suits
Christmas Eve 2028 suits those who want an unhurried holiday: families, couples, and anyone using the long stretch up to New Year for a proper break. It suits travellers less if they want events, since public programmes are minimal.
Do your shopping by Saturday 23 December, keep some cash and cooked food at home in case of an unexpected closure, and look up local service times early. If you plan a trip between the holidays, popular winter destinations get booked up weeks ahead, so reserve rooms and rail seats soon. Since the entry is rule-based, treat all practical details as things to confirm locally.
