What the Carnival of Cultures is

The Karneval der Kulturen is Berlin's multicultural street festival in Kreuzberg, and its centrepiece is a colourful parade of dance groups, costumes and floats that celebrates the many communities living in the city. Around it, a street fair with stages, music and food stalls takes over the streets near Blücherplatz. Entry is free, which keeps the atmosphere open and the crowds large.

For 2027 our data lists four days, from Friday 14 May to Monday 17 May, with the big parade on Pentecost Sunday, 16 May 2027.

Dates in 2027 and how they are set

The dates of this festival are rule-based: they follow Pentecost. The parade takes place on Pentecost Sunday, and the street fair surrounds that weekend, with Whit Monday as the last day. In 2027 Easter falls on 28 March, which puts Pentecost on 16 May and Whit Monday on 17 May.

That makes the calendar logic reliable, but the detailed programme, stage times and parade route are set by the organiser each year. Check karneval-berlin.de for the final schedule before you travel, and treat our window as the frame rather than the programme.

Character of the festival and what to do

Berlin's festival began in the 1990s as a way to show the diversity of a city that is home to people from many countries. On parade day, groups from different communities dance through Kreuzberg in costumes, with drums and brass bands. Between the highlights, the stalls and stages invite you to wander without a plan.

The area gets very crowded on parade day. Arrive early if you want a good spot along the route, bring water and expect to stand for a while. On the quieter Friday and Monday you can explore Kreuzberg at a calmer pace, including the canal banks and the neighbourhood markets.

Food and drink

The street fair is a food festival as much as a music one. Stalls offer dishes from many cuisines, so you can eat your way through several countries in one afternoon. Kreuzberg is also known for its Turkish, Middle Eastern and Asian restaurants, which are a safe fallback if the festival queues are long. Expect to find vegetarian options at many stands, but check each stall as the range changes year to year.

Getting there and where to stay

Kreuzberg is well connected by U-Bahn and bus. Using the U-Bahn on parade day is much easier than driving, since streets are closed for the event. Berlin Hauptbahnhof and BER airport both connect to the centre within about half an hour by public transport.

Hotels and apartments in Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Friedrichshain are the most convenient. Pentecost weekend is also a popular travel time across Germany, so book early, particularly if you want a double room for the Friday to Monday span.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027

Whit Monday, 17 May 2027, is a public holiday in Berlin, so the last day of the festival is free for most employees. The earlier Ascension Day falls on Thursday 6 May, with Friday 7 May as the bridge day. Berlin has no Corpus Christi holiday, so there is no extra stop on 27 May.

To attend from Friday evening to Monday you need no vacation day if you travel after work, and one vacation day (Friday 14 May) if you want to be there from the Friday afternoon. A longer break is also possible: take Monday 10 to Friday 14 May, five vacation days, and you get ten days in a row from Saturday 8 May to Monday 17 May. The weekend of 8 and 9 May comes straight after the Ascension long weekend, so many Berliners may already have been away.

Tips and who it suits

This festival suits families, friends and anyone who likes music, dance and street food. Bring sun protection or a light rain jacket depending on the forecast, keep valuables close in the crowd, and use public transport. Confirm the programme and the parade route on the official site shortly before the weekend.
