What Kiel Week is
Kiel Week is the big summer festival of the Baltic port of Kiel, in Schleswig-Holstein, and it is widely described as one of the largest sailing events in the world. Regattas on the Kiel Fjord sit alongside a city-wide programme of concerts, markets, food stalls and street entertainment. The planner lists the 2027 edition from Saturday 19 June to Sunday 27 June 2027, nine days in total.
Sailing began the event in the nineteenth century, and the first regattas date to 1882. Today most of the programme can be enjoyed without any interest in boats: you can simply walk the waterfront, listen to music and eat.
How the dates are set and what is not yet confirmed
Kiel Week traditionally ends on the last weekend of June and lasts nine days, beginning on a Saturday. The 2027 date has not been published, and the dates here are an estimate based on the 2026 pattern. For 2027, the last weekend of June is 26 and 27 June, which gives the Saturday start on 19 June.
Status: estimated. The programme, the timing of the main regattas and any special parade of ships should be checked with the city of Kiel and the organisers once they publish them, normally in spring.
Character of the festival
The festival has two sides. One is the sport, with racing classes from dinghies to larger yachts on the water. The other is a very large, mostly free public festival on land, spread through the city centre and along the harbour front, with many stages for music and a market with food from many countries.
The mood is relaxed and international, helped by visiting crews and ships. Locals and day visitors mingle with sailors, and the long June evenings in northern Germany, when it stays light late, suit an outdoor festival well.
What to see, do and eat
Walk along the waterfront to watch the boats, visit the festival markets and catch a free concert or two. Harbour boat trips give a closer look at the fjord, and ferries and large ships are part of the daily scene in Kiel.
For food, fish is the natural choice: a bread roll with herring or smoked fish is the classic northern snack, and smoked sprats are a Kiel speciality. The international market adds a wide range of dishes from many cuisines, so there is something for most tastes.
Getting there and where to stay
Kiel has a central railway station close to the harbour, with regional links to Hamburg and Lübeck, and Hamburg airport is the main gateway for air travellers. Ferries from Kiel to Norway and Sweden also operate from the city, so the festival can be paired with a Scandinavian trip.
Accommodation is under pressure during Kiel Week, with hotels in the city filling early. Look at Hamburg, Lübeck, Eckernförde or smaller towns in the surrounding area if prices are high, and book as soon as the official dates are confirmed.
Holidays and vacation days in June 2027
The festival would start on Saturday 19 June 2027 and end on Sunday 27 June. Schleswig-Holstein has no public holiday in June 2027, since Whit Monday is on 17 May and Corpus Christi is not observed in this state. So the window has no bridge day.
A weekend visit on the opening weekend costs no vacation days. A full-week stay from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 June uses the weekdays 21 to 25 June, so five vacation days for nine days away. A shorter midweek trip from Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 June takes three days. Check Schleswig-Holstein's school holiday dates for 2027, since they affect hotel prices and travel.
Tips and who it suits
Kiel Week suits sailing fans, families, couples and day trippers from Hamburg or Lübeck who enjoy a large, open-air festival. It is less suited to visitors who want a quiet harbour town, since the waterfront is crowded, especially on the final weekend.
Bring a windproof jacket even in June, because the Baltic coast can feel cool, and wear comfortable shoes. Treat the 2027 dates as provisional and confirm them before you book.
