What the Leipzig Book Fair is
The Leipziger Buchmesse is the book industry's big spring gathering in eastern Germany. Unlike the Frankfurt Book Fair, which is mainly a trade event, Leipzig is strongly geared towards the public and towards meeting authors. Alongside the stands at the Messe Leipzig fairgrounds, the reading festival Leipzig liest brings readings to bookshops, libraries, churches, cafes and other venues across the whole city.
If you love books, comics or literature in translation, it is one of the most accessible fairs in the country for ordinary visitors.
Dates in 2027 and status
The planner lists the 2027 fair as Thursday 18 March to Sunday 21 March, and the status is confirmed, based on the fair's own published date list for 2027. Four days, from Thursday to Sunday, is the usual shape. Individual programme items, guests and ticket categories are announced closer to the date, so confirm details on the official site before you travel.
The organisers usually sell day tickets and sometimes other options. Check what applies to your day, and whether reservations are needed for specific readings.
Character and history
The fair has a long background linked to Leipzig's old role as a book-trade centre, and the city still calls itself a city of books. Today the fair is known for its public focus: you can buy books, speak to publishers, and attend a very wide range of events. A large manga and comic convention often runs alongside it, drawing a younger, costume-loving crowd, and an annual book prize is awarded during the fair.
The mood is lively and a bit chaotic in a good way, with long queues at popular signings and quiet corners for independent publishers.
What to see, do and eat
Plan your visit around two or three events, then leave room to wander the halls. Outside the fairgrounds, Leipzig liest is the part many locals love: evening readings in bookshops and unusual venues. Try a Saxon cake like Eierschecke in a cafe, and look at the Leipzig old town, the Nikolaikirche and the Thomaskirche between sessions.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the halls are large, and bring a bag you can carry books in. Food at the fairgrounds is functional, so many visitors eat in the city in the evening.
Getting there and where to stay
The Messe Leipzig fairgrounds are north of the city centre and connected by tram and S-Bahn; trains arriving at Leipzig Hauptbahnhof from Berlin, Dresden or Frankfurt make it easy to come without a car. Driving to the fair is possible but parking can be a bottleneck on busy days.
Hotels in the centre are in demand in fair weeks, so book as soon as you decide, and expect higher prices for the Friday and Saturday nights.
Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027
There is no public holiday in Saxony from 18 to 21 March 2027. Easter falls on Sunday 28 March: Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March, a week after the fair closes. A Thursday to Sunday trip costs two vacation days, Thursday 18 and Friday 19 March. A Friday to Sunday visit costs one.
If you want to stretch the stay into Easter, take Thursday 18 and Friday 19, then Monday 22 to Thursday 25 March: six vacation days for twelve days off in a row, from Thursday 18 to Monday 29 March, since Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays. You would not need to stay in Leipzig that long, but it is a natural way to combine the fair with a longer spring break.
Tips and who it suits
The fair suits readers, students, collectors of comics and families with older children. Saturday is typically the busiest day, Thursday and Friday the calmest. Buy tickets online if possible, bring cash for small publishers, and check your return train on Sunday, as the last day is crowded. The dates are confirmed, but programme details can still change.
