What the Lübeck Christmas markets are

Lübeck presents its Advent season as a Christmas city rather than a single market, with several markets spread through the historic Old Town. The planner lists the 2027 edition from Monday 22 November to Thursday 30 December 2027. The Old Town island, with its brick Gothic churches and gabled merchant houses, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which gives the markets a distinctive setting.

The city is also known for marzipan, and the confectionery tradition connects naturally to the season. A visit combines markets, sightseeing and shopping in a compact area that is easy to explore on foot.

How the dates are set and their status

The Lübeck markets usually open on the Monday after Totensonntag and run to the end of December. The 2027 dates have not been published and are derived from last year's pattern, so the status is estimated. In 2027, Totensonntag falls on Sunday 21 November, which makes Monday 22 November the expected opening day.

The end date of 30 December is also an estimate. Some markets close before Christmas and others stay open into the last days of the year, so the individual market's own page is the place to check opening hours before you plan a specific evening.

History and character

Lübeck was once the leading city of the Hanseatic League, a trading network of northern European towns, and the merchant wealth of that era is still visible in the buildings. The markets use this backdrop with historic façades, candle-lit streets and the town hall as a centrepiece.

The tone is quieter and more traditional than the markets of the big Rhineland cities. Many visitors come for crafts, regional specialities and the atmosphere of a small medieval centre in winter.

What to see, do and eat

Walk the Old Town between markets and add the Holstentor, the town gate that is a symbol of the city, to your route. The churches, courtyards and passages are worth a look, and a visit to a marzipan shop is almost obligatory.

For food and drink, expect mulled wine, grilled sausages, roasted almonds and, naturally, marzipan in many forms. Lübeck's red wine tradition, known as Rotspon, is a local curiosity, and a warm meal in a traditional restaurant is a good way to end the day.

Getting there and where to stay

Lübeck's main station is a short walk from the Old Town island, with regional trains to Hamburg that run in about 45 minutes to an hour, plus links to Kiel and Schwerin. That makes a day trip from Hamburg very realistic.

Hotels in the Old Town fill on weekends in Advent. If you want to stay overnight, book as soon as the markets confirm their dates. Travemünde on the coast and nearby towns offer alternatives, though they are a longer ride in.

Holidays and vacation days in 2027

The window opens on Monday 22 November and closes on Thursday 30 December 2027. Christmas Day and Boxing Day, 25 and 26 December, are Saturday and Sunday, so Schleswig-Holstein gets no extra weekday off, and New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday. Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December, is not a statutory holiday. The first Advent Sunday is 28 November.

A weekend visit costs no leave. A weekday trip from Monday 22 to Friday 26 November would take five days. Using the quiet days between the years, a stay from Monday 27 to Thursday 30 December takes four vacation days. Employers often allow flexible time off for the Christmas week, but this is a company matter.

Tips and who it suits

The Lübeck markets suit couples, families, history lovers and anyone who prefers a calmer, more traditional Advent experience. They are less suited to visitors who want a huge spectacle with large stages and many rides.

Dress for cold and wet cobbles, and aim for weekday afternoons for more space. Since the dates are an estimate, confirm them before you book overnight stays.
