Lübeck's Christmas city in 2028
Lübeck's Christmas season brings several small and mid-sized markets into the historic Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site on an island between river arms. The planner window for the 2028 edition runs from Monday 27 November to Saturday 30 December 2028. This is a short entry compared with some years, because the first Advent falls very late.
The status is estimated. There is no announcement for 2028 yet, so the dates come from the usual pattern rather than from a published schedule. Treat the window as a first orientation.
Why the 2028 season starts late
The markets usually begin on the Monday after Totensonntag. In 2028 the first Advent Sunday is 3 December, the latest date it can fall on, so Totensonntag is Sunday 26 November and the expected opening is Monday 27 November. The planner shows 30 December as the end, a Saturday, but that is an estimate too.
The practical effect is a compressed season. There are only three full weekends before Christmas, and the last Advent Sunday, 24 December, coincides with Christmas Eve. If you prefer quieter markets, the opening week is a good time, since the real Advent rush starts the following weekend.
Character and history
Lübeck was the leading city of the medieval Hanseatic League, and its skyline of red-brick church towers and gabled houses reflects that trading wealth. The Christmas markets sit in this setting around squares, courtyards and the town hall.
The atmosphere is traditional and relatively calm. Visitors who like craft stalls, small-scale charm and walkable streets tend to enjoy it, while those who prefer large festival-style markets may find it modest.
What to see and eat
Plan a route that includes the Holstentor, one or two of the large churches and a visit to a marzipan specialist. Lübeck marzipan is a regional product and a popular gift. In the evenings the illuminated streets are a good reason to stay beyond afternoon.
At the stalls you will find mulled wine, hot snacks and sweets. Pair them with a warm sit-down meal in the Old Town, where traditional restaurants serve northern German dishes, and finish with a coffee and a marzipan treat.
Getting there and where to stay
From Hamburg, regional trains take roughly three quarters of an hour to an hour to Lübeck, so a day trip is easy. The station sits at the edge of the Old Town island, and the markets are a short walk away.
Overnight stays are best booked early, particularly for the weekends of 2 and 3 December and 9 and 10 December. Smaller hotels in the Old Town fill first. Remember to check the last train home if you plan to stay for the evening lights.
Holidays and vacation days in 2028
The weekdays line up differently from 2027. Christmas Eve, 24 December 2028, is a Sunday, Christmas Day on Monday 25 December and Boxing Day on Tuesday 26 December are public holidays in Schleswig-Holstein, and New Year's Day 2029 is a Monday. The window ends on Saturday 30 December.
A weekend visit costs no vacation days. A weekday visit from Monday 27 to Friday 1 December takes five days, and Wednesday 29 November to Friday 1 December takes three. Between Christmas and New Year, Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 December would take three vacation days to join the holiday block of 23 December to 1 January. Of that period, the two public holidays on 25 and 26 December are already free, so you do not need to count them.
Tips and who it suits
The Lübeck markets suit couples, history fans and families who like a quieter Advent. They are less suitable for visitors who want a very large market with many rides.
Check the organisers' announcements for opening hours, and book accommodation flexibly because the 2028 dates are an estimate. Wear warm clothes and shoes for cobbles.
