What Luther's Wedding is

Luther's Wedding (Luthers Hochzeit) is a historical city festival in Lutherstadt Wittenberg that commemorates the 1525 wedding of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora. According to the event data it includes a grand procession and twelve historical themed areas across the old town.

It has been celebrated since 1994 and is much smaller than the big German folk festivals, which gives it a local, costumed and slightly theatrical character rather than a commercial one.

Dates in 2026 and how they are set

The 2026 festival is confirmed for Friday 12 to Sunday 14 June. The date is tied to the mid-June anniversary of the wedding, which is widely given as 13 June 1525, so in 2026 the main day, Saturday 13 June, falls inside the weekend.

Because the organisers publish the detailed programme separately, check the official Luther museum site for the procession time and any ticketed elements before you travel.

History and character

Luther, the former monk, married Katharina von Bora, a former nun, which was a scandal and a statement at once. The festival turns that moment into street theatre, with townspeople in period costume taking over lanes that otherwise host a steady stream of Reformation tourists.

Because it is a community festival, you will meet craftspeople, musicians and food stalls that fit the sixteenth-century theme more than the souvenir trade.

What to see, do and eat

Follow the procession and then explore the historical themed areas. Beyond the festival, Wittenberg offers the Luther House, the Castle Church and the Town Church, as well as the Cranach courtyards, which together make a full weekend even without the event.

For food, expect market-style bratwurst and medieval-themed snacks, and use the old-town restaurants for a sit-down meal. Carry cash for small stalls in case card payment is unavailable.

Getting there and where to stay

Wittenberg has a regional rail connection and sits on the line between Berlin and Halle, so rail is the easiest way in. The old town is small, and almost everything is on foot.

Rooms are limited in a small town, so book as soon as you decide, particularly for the Saturday night. Nearby towns offer fallback options if the old town is full.

Public holidays, bridge days and your vacation budget

The festival runs Friday to Sunday. Saxony-Anhalt has no public holiday between 12 and 14 June 2026, so there is no bridge-day effect to exploit. Whit Monday was earlier, on 25 May, and Corpus Christi on 4 June is not a statutory holiday in Saxony-Anhalt.

A full festival visit therefore takes one vacation day, the Friday. If you want to arrive on Thursday 11 June for a quiet evening before the opening, that is two days. Note that on the same weekend the Stendal Rolandfest is also held, so you would pick one or plan two separate trips.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits history fans, families with older children and anyone interested in the Reformation. Arrive early on Saturday for a good viewing spot along the procession route.

Confirm the schedule, procession times and any entry fees on the organiser's pages. The dates are confirmed in our data, but daily programme details are published by the organisers.

Wittenberg is compact, so the festival and the permanent sights can share one weekend if you plan the order. A sensible plan is to see the museums and churches on Friday, when the town is calmer, and save Saturday for the procession and the themed areas. Sunday works well for a slower walk along the Elbe or for travelling on to Berlin or Leipzig, both within reach by train. Wear comfortable shoes, since cobblestones and a full day on your feet are part of the experience, and bring a light rain jacket because mid-June weather can change quickly.
