What the Magdeburg Christmas Market is

The Magdeburg Christmas Market is the largest Advent market in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the event data, and it is spread across the Alter Markt and the streets around the old town hall, with a light display around the cathedral as one of its signature features. It is a classic German market with wooden stalls, mulled wine, roasted almonds and a stage programme, set in a city that is better known for its science, canals and Otto the Great than for tourism.

This page covers the 2027 season. The listing is an estimate based on the pattern of earlier seasons and on press coverage from the previous winter, not on a published schedule from the city, so please read the dates as a planning aid.

Dates for 2027 and how they are set

The planner shows Thursday 18 November to Wednesday 29 December 2027, a run of just under six weeks. That is longer than many markets, which typically stop on 22 or 23 December, and the long tail into the last days of the year is the unusual part of this estimate. The status is estimated, so the opening day and the final day could both change, and whether the stalls stay open on 24, 25 and 26 December is not something the data tells us.

Advent itself starts on Sunday 28 November 2027, and German markets often open a few days to a week before that, around the Sunday of the dead (21 November). Check the official city or organiser announcement for the confirmed schedule before you plan around a specific date.

The city, the cathedral and the market atmosphere

Magdeburg sits on the Elbe and was a favoured seat of Emperor Otto I in the tenth century. Its cathedral is regarded as the first Gothic cathedral on German soil and holds Otto's tomb. The equestrian statue known as the Magdeburger Reiter, a copy of which stands near the Alter Markt, is another symbol of the city. The Christmas market borrows from this setting: the cathedral lights glow at dusk and the old market square is the natural gathering place.

Beyond Advent, Magdeburg offers the Green Citadel designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Elbe promenade and the large water bridge of the Wasserstraßenkreuz a few kilometres away, which carries the Mittellandkanal over the river.

Food, drink and things to do

Expect Glühwein, Feuerzangenbowle, grilled sausages, potato pancakes, gingerbread and roasted nuts. Regional Saxony-Anhalt specialities turn up on some stalls, but check the actual list of vendors once the market opens because it changes from year to year.

A good rhythm for a visit is an afternoon in the cathedral and the museums, then the market as it gets dark. If you have a second day, add the Elbauenpark or a canal ride, or travel on to Halle or Wernigerode for another Christmas market.

Public holidays and bridge days in Saxony-Anhalt, 2027

The season starts on a Thursday and ends on a Wednesday, so there are plenty of weekends: 20 and 21 November, 27 and 28 November, 4 and 5 December, 11 and 12 December, 18 and 19 December, and 25 and 26 December. A weekend visit with a Friday arrival costs at most one vacation day, and a Saturday and Sunday trip costs none.

Christmas is unusual in 2027. Christmas Day (25 December) is a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday, so neither creates a day off in the week, and Christmas Eve is a Friday that is not a statutory holiday. If you would like a quiet pre-Christmas break, taking Monday 20 to Thursday 23 December costs four vacation days. Reformation Day on 31 October is a Sunday this year and not relevant for the market, and Epiphany on 6 January 2028 is a Thursday in Saxony-Anhalt, though it lies after the market has closed.

Tips and who it suits

The market suits couples, families and anyone who prefers a mid-sized city market with fewer crowds than Berlin or Nuremberg. Weekday evenings are quieter than weekends, and the weekend before Christmas will be busy.

Book a room as early as you can once the dates are confirmed, wrap up warmly because the Elbe wind can feel cold, and use the tram network, which makes it easy to get from the main station to the old town without a car.
