The Mainz Johannisnacht in 2028

Every summer the banks of the Rhine in Mainz host the Johannisnacht, a multi-day festival named after Johannes Gutenberg, the printing pioneer whom the city claims as its own. The old town fills with stages, stalls, an artists' market and a fireworks display, and the festival is one of the biggest street events in Rheinland-Pfalz.

This page deals with the 2028 edition, which is still some way off, so everything about timing is provisional.

Estimated 2028 dates

The entry for 2028 reads Friday 23 June to Monday 26 June 2028, and the status is estimated. The organiser has not published official dates. The estimate follows the habit of previous years in which the festival spans a weekend around 24 June, the feast of St John. In 2028, 24 June is a Saturday, so the Friday-to-Monday weekend sits neatly around it.

Do not book non-refundable travel yet. When the city announces the programme, confirm dates and compare them with your plans. If the festival is moved by a week, hotels and trains may be much more expensive or cheaper.

Character and background

Gutenberg lived in Mainz in the fifteenth century and developed printing with movable metal type, which changed the spread of knowledge across Europe. The city celebrates that legacy with a museum and with this festival, which takes the first name Johannes and the midsummer date as its anchor.

The mood on the Rhine is informal. Visitors wander between stages, eat from stalls, sit on the riverbank and gather for the fireworks. The audience is mixed, from families in the afternoon to young adults at night.

What to see, do and eat

Take time for the Gutenberg Museum, the cathedral and the narrow streets of the old town. The Rhine promenade is a good walking route in summer, and a river cruise gives a different view of the city.

Taste Spundekäs, Handkäs mit Musik or Weck, Worscht und Woi. Rheinhessen wines, particularly Riesling and Silvaner, are the regional choice for a warm evening.

Getting there and where to stay

The S-Bahn links Mainz with Frankfurt and the airport, and regional trains connect Wiesbaden, Bingen and Koblenz. Streets near the Rhine are closed during the festival, and trains are busy after the fireworks. Travelling by public transport is the sensible choice.

Hotel capacity is limited on festival weekends, so reserve early with a flexible rate. Wiesbaden and Frankfurt are good fallback bases.

Public holidays and vacation days in 2028

The estimated period starts on Friday 23 June and ends on Monday 26 June 2028. A full stay uses two weekdays, Friday and Monday, so two vacation days, or none if you come only for Saturday and Sunday. Corpus Christi, a public holiday in Rheinland-Pfalz, falls on Thursday 15 June 2028, more than a week before, so it cannot form a bridge. The next holiday is German Unity Day on Tuesday 3 October. School holiday dates in the state should be checked in the official calendar.

The festival suits friends, couples and families who like crowds and music. Bring a rain jacket, because June weather is changeable, and look at the city's website for confirmed dates.

Because this edition is an estimate, keep your plans flexible. Look for a hotel with free cancellation, watch the city's announcements in spring, and compare train prices once the dates are confirmed. If you travel with children, plan for the afternoon and leave before the late crowds, and agree on a meeting point near the cathedral in case anyone gets separated. Wear sturdy shoes, since much of the festival takes place on cobbled streets and the riverbank.
