What the Mainz Rose Monday Parade is
The Mainzer Rosenmontagszug is one of the major Rose Monday parades of the Rhineland. Floats, marching groups, music corps and costumed walkers move through the city centre, and the crowds along the route throw and catch sweets while shouting the local greeting, Helau. In Mainz the carnival is called Fastnacht or Fassenacht, and the city takes it as seriously as any place in Germany.
The parade is organised by the Mainzer Carneval-Verein, usually known as MCV, one of the oldest carnival associations in the country. It is the high point of a season that includes street parties, sessions in the halls and satirical speeches.
Date in 2027 and how it is calculated
Rose Monday 2027 is Monday 8 February. The date is rule-based: Easter Sunday in 2027 is 28 March, and Rose Monday falls 48 days earlier. Weiberfastnacht, which opens the street carnival, is Thursday 4 February, and Ash Wednesday follows on 10 February. The calculation is reliable, but the start time, the route and the order of the groups are decided by the organiser, so look at the MCV announcements nearer the time.
Because the date moves with Easter, 2027 is a relatively early carnival year. A February parade means winter weather, so plan for cold and possibly rain.
Character of Mainz carnival
Mainz Fastnacht is known for its political satire and for the tradition of the Fastnachtssitzung, the cabaret-like session broadcast on television. The parade shares that spirit: many floats carry caricatures and slogans commenting on current events, and the humour can be sharp. Compared with Cologne or Düsseldorf, many visitors find Mainz a little more focused on wit than on sheer volume, though the atmosphere on the street is exuberant.
Costumes are almost obligatory. If you stand in the crowd without any, you will notice you are in the minority. A hat, a wig or face paint is enough to blend in.
What to see, do and eat
The best spots along the route fill early, so arrive well before the parade starts, and bring a bag for the sweets. Besides the parade, Mainz has a lot to offer: the cathedral with its thousand-year history, the Gutenberg Museum dedicated to the inventor of the printing press, and the Rhine promenade. The old town between the cathedral and the market is compact and walkable.
Local specialities include Spundekäs, a creamy cheese dip eaten with pretzels, Handkäs, and the simple combination of Weck, Worscht und Woi, a bread roll, a sausage and wine. During carnival, Fastnachtsküchelchen, fried pastries, are a seasonal treat.
Getting there and where to stay
Mainz main station is a regional hub, and the S-Bahn connects the city with Frankfurt and Frankfurt airport in about half an hour. On Rose Monday trains are very full and some stations are closed or restricted, so check the transport operators' special arrangements. Driving into the centre is not sensible, as roads along the route are closed.
Rooms in Mainz are scarce on carnival weekends. Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Rüsselsheim or Bingen are all within reach by train.
Public holidays and vacation days in 2027
Rose Monday is not a public holiday in Rheinland-Pfalz, even though many local businesses, schools and offices are closed or run shortened hours. Check with your employer. Attending the parade costs one vacation day, Monday 8 February, if you are not already off, and a stay from Saturday 6 February to Monday 8 February needs only that day. The nearest official holidays are New Year's Day on Friday 1 January and Good Friday on 26 March, so there is no bridge day. Adding Weiberfastnacht on Thursday 4 February and Friday 5 February would need up to three days off in total.
The parade suits friends, families with older children and anyone who enjoys satire and costume. Dress warmly under the costume, keep valuables safe and use public transport.
