About the 2027 Christkindlmarkt in Munich
The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz is Munich's municipal Christmas market, set against the Neues Rathaus. Expect wooden stalls selling crafts, seasonal sweets and hot drinks, a large tree and music from the town hall balcony. It is a central, walkable stop between the Frauenkirche and the Viktualienmarkt, and it works as a first or last stop of a city weekend.
This page covers the 2027 edition specifically, so the calendar logic below is anchored in 2027 weekdays.
Dates: rule-based, not yet officially confirmed
Our data lists Friday 19 November to Friday 24 December 2027, a span of 36 days, with the status rule-based. That means the dates were derived and not announced by the city: from 2026 the market opens on the Friday before Totensonntag, which in 2027 is Sunday 21 November, and runs to 24 December. The first Advent Sunday is 28 November 2027.
Until the city publishes the programme, treat the dates as a very likely pattern, not a promise. Check the organiser's page before booking anything non-refundable, especially for the opening weekend.
Character, sights and food
Christmas markets in the German-speaking world grew out of winter trading fairs, and Munich's has long been part of the city's calendar in the old town. Today the Marienplatz market is a mix of tradition and tourism: local families, office groups and international visitors share the same few hundred metres.
The setting shapes the character. The town hall facade, the Glockenspiel and the surrounding pedestrian streets mean you are never far from shops, cafes and churches, so the market feels part of the city instead of a separate enclosure.
Look for hand-crafted ornaments, candles, wooden toys and nativity figures, and take a break with Glühwein, children's punch, roasted nuts or Lebkuchen. Savoury options include sausage in a roll and potato fritters. If you have time, add the Viktualienmarkt for regional food, the Residenz for a museum visit and the Frauenkirche towers' neighbourhood for photographs.
Munich also has a nativity market in the shopping streets in December, a good extra for anyone interested in handmade crib figures.
Getting there and where to stay
Reach Marienplatz by S-Bahn or U-Bahn; both stop directly below the square. Visitors coming by long-distance train arrive at the Hauptbahnhof and can walk or take a short underground ride. Cars are best left outside the old town.
For accommodation, look near the Hauptbahnhof, Isartor or Sendlinger Tor, and consider staying slightly outside the centre with a good S-Bahn link if prices near the square are high.
Public holidays and vacation days in Bavaria, 2027
The opening day, 19 November 2027, is a Friday, and the closing day, 24 December, is also a Friday. Christmas Day (25 December) and Boxing Day (26 December) both fall on the weekend in 2027, so the holidays cost no extra weekday. Allerheiligen on 1 November 2027 is a Monday and a Bavarian holiday, but it comes before the market starts.
A Friday-to-Sunday trip from 19 to 21 November takes zero vacation days if you arrive in the evening and one day if you want the whole Friday. A visit on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 December would take two days of leave, or fewer if your employer closes on Christmas Eve. For a longer festive break, taking Monday 27 to Friday 31 December gives five vacation days for the nine days from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January.
Tips and who it suits
Come on a weekday afternoon for space to browse, or on a weekend evening for the lights and the full atmosphere. Families with small children may prefer the late morning. Dress in layers since you will mostly be standing outside.
As the dates are still rule-based, subscribe to the city's announcements or check again a few weeks before travelling.
