What the Oktoberfest Hannover is

The Oktoberfest Hannover is, according to the event data, Germany's second largest Oktoberfest and the world's third largest. It takes place on the Schützenplatz and, in 2026, runs from Friday 25 September to Sunday 11 October, a stretch of 17 days. The same grounds host the city's July Schützenfest, so the layout and the transport links are familiar to many locals.

The planner lists this edition as confirmed. The event data mentions around 900,000 visitors a year and describes the festival as smaller than Munich, with shorter queues and lower prices.

Dates and how they are set

Unlike Munich, which finishes on a fixed date, Hannover places its Oktoberfest across late September and early October. For 2026 that is a Friday start and a Sunday end, covering three weekends: 25 to 27 September, 2 to 4 October and 9 to 11 October.

The organiser publishes the opening and closing days, and the planner shows them as confirmed with the official source. Tent programmes, opening hours and special evenings are set separately and can change, so check them before booking tickets or table reservations.

Character, sights and food

The tents offer Bavarian-style music, benches and beer, and visitors often wear Tracht, though nobody checks. Alongside the tents there is a fairground with rides, so the atmosphere is part beer hall, part funfair. Weekday afternoons tend to be relaxed, while Friday and Saturday evenings are loud and crowded.

Expect roast chicken, pretzels, Obatzda, sausages and the sweet snacks that belong to any fair. Outside the grounds, Hannover's old town, the Neues Rathaus with its dome lift and the Herrenhäuser Gärten make good daytime options. A walk around the Maschsee works well on a dry autumn day.

Getting there and where to stay

The Schützenplatz is close to the city centre and served by the Stadtbahn, so there is no need to drive. Hannover's main station has long-distance and regional services, which helps for visitors from Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin and the Ruhr area.

Hotel prices in Hannover can climb sharply when a trade fair coincides with the festival, so check the fair calendar and book before the dates fill. Travelling from Celle, Hildesheim or Hameln is a cheaper alternative, with a late train home as the main thing to confirm.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2026

Three weekends mean you can pick the quieter or the livelier one without taking any leave. For a full festival trip from Friday to Sunday, you need at most one vacation day. Visiting on Saturday and Sunday needs none.

German Unity Day, 3 October, falls on a Saturday in 2026 and Niedersachsen does not grant a replacement day, so there is no extra day off in the middle weekend. Reformation Day, a public holiday in Niedersachsen, is on Saturday 31 October, which again lands on a weekend and falls after the festival has ended. Because of that, the festival period offers no official bridge day.

If you want a longer trip, the autumn school holidays in Niedersachsen are the main option for families, and you should check the 2026 dates because they can overlap with the second or third weekend. Taking Monday 5 October through Friday 9 October would give nine consecutive days off with five vacation days, running from Saturday 3 October to Sunday 11 October.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits groups of friends, couples and families who want a Bavarian-style celebration without Munich's prices and distances. If you dislike loud music and crowds, go on a weekday afternoon.

Arrive early on Fridays and Saturdays if you want a seat in a tent, and keep an eye on the weather, as late September and October evenings can be cold. Confirm opening hours and any special days with the organiser before you travel.
