What the Stendal Rolandfest is
The Stendal Rolandfest is a town festival in the historic old town of Stendal, the largest town of the Altmark region in the north of Saxony-Anhalt. It takes its name from the Roland figure that stands in front of the town hall, a stone statue of the kind that many northern German towns used as a symbol of civic rights and market freedom. The festival turns the streets and squares around that landmark into an open-air programme with several stages, food stalls and a long list of local clubs and bands.
According to the event data, the 2026 edition was the 55th, held from 12 to 14 June. If the festival keeps its yearly rhythm, 2027 would be the 56th, but that count is simple arithmetic and not an official announcement. The listing for 2027 is therefore a planning estimate, and the programme itself has not been published yet.
Dates for 2027 and how they are set
The calendar entry for 2027 runs from Friday 11 June to Sunday 13 June 2027. Its status is estimated, which means it is derived from the pattern of earlier years, where the festival has taken place on a weekend in the middle of June. It is not a confirmed date from the organiser. The 2026 edition ran Friday to Sunday as well, so a Friday start is a reasonable guess, but a shift by a week in either direction would not be unusual for a town festival.
Before you book a room or a train ticket, check the official page of the festival or the town of Stendal. Until the organiser publishes the dates, treat everything below as a way to prepare, not as a promise.
Character of the festival and the old town
The Rolandfest is a festival of the town for the town. Expect a relaxed mix of live music, children's activities, craft and food stands and the kind of chatter you get when most of the visitors are from the surrounding region. It is not a big-name music event, and that is part of its appeal for people who like small-city atmosphere.
Stendal itself rewards a slow walk. The brick Gothic architecture typical for the Hanseatic and Altmark region is visible in the Dom St. Nikolaus, the Marienkirche, the town hall with its Roland and the surviving town gates such as the Uenglinger Tor. Stendal is also the birthplace of Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the art historian often counted among the founders of modern archaeology, and a museum in town is dedicated to him.
What to eat, see and do
Festival food is the usual German repertoire: grilled sausages, fish rolls, sweet pastries and regional beer. If you want something distinctly local, ask for Baumkuchen. The Altmark is known for the tall, layered cake baked on a rotating spit, and the version from nearby Salzwedel is the one with protected status.
Between acts you can climb a church tower if one is open, visit the Roland from every side and wander out to the old town wall. Tangermünde, another well-preserved brick town on the Elbe, is a short drive or train ride away and makes a good half-day addition if the weather is dry.
Getting there and where to stay
Stendal lies on the main railway line between Berlin and Hannover and has regional and long-distance connections, so arriving by train is easy from both directions. The old town is compact and walkable from the station, which matters because festival streets are usually closed to cars.
Accommodation is limited compared with a big city. Small hotels and guesthouses in the centre fill up on festival weekends, so book early once the date is confirmed, or consider staying in a nearby town and commuting in the evening.
Planning around public holidays and bridge days in Saxony-Anhalt
Start and end fall on Friday and Sunday, so the weekend does the heavy lifting. Arriving on Friday afternoon costs at most one vacation day, and you need none at all if you only come for Saturday and Sunday. There is no public holiday in Saxony-Anhalt close to these dates in 2027: Whit Monday was on 17 May, and Corpus Christi on 27 May is not a statewide holiday in Saxony-Anhalt.
That also means there is no bridge-day trick available here. If you want a longer trip, add Thursday and Friday for two vacation days and combine the festival with a visit to the Altmark or a stop in Magdeburg. For families, check the school holiday dates of your own state, since the festival falls in the weeks before the summer break in most regions.
Tips and who it suits
The Rolandfest suits day trippers from Berlin, Hannover and Magdeburg, families, and anyone who likes a regional festival without queues. Bring cash as a precaution, since small stands do not always take cards, and pack a rain jacket because mid June weather can change quickly.
Because the 2027 date is only estimated, build in flexibility: choose refundable rooms or a train ticket you can change, and confirm the dates on the organiser's page a few weeks ahead.
