About the Rolandfest in Stendal
Every June the old town of Stendal in the Altmark, in the north of Saxony-Anhalt, hosts its Rolandfest, a street and stage festival named after the Roland statue by the town hall. A Roland is a knightly figure that northern German towns erected as a sign of their market and court rights, and Stendal's is among the best known. The festival is run as a classic Stadtfest: several stages, stalls, clubs and a crowd that is largely local and regional.
The event data lists the 2026 edition as the 55th, held from 12 to 14 June. The entry for 2028 is a rule-based estimate carried forward from that pattern, so treat it as a likely window, not a published programme.
Dates in 2028 and their status
The planner shows Friday 9 June to Sunday 11 June 2028. The status is estimated: no organiser has confirmed these days yet. They follow the habit of a festival weekend in the middle of June and the Friday to Sunday format of earlier years. Because Whitsun 2028 already falls on 4 June, the festival could plausibly sit one week earlier or later than the estimate.
Please check the official festival page or the town of Stendal before you commit to any booking that cannot be cancelled.
Festival mood, history and the town around it
Stendal was a member of the Hanseatic League and once one of the most important towns of the Mark Brandenburg's northern part, and its centre still shows that past in brick Gothic. The Dom St. Nikolaus with its large medieval windows, the Marienkirche on the market square and the Uenglinger Tor, a tall town gate, are the buildings most visitors photograph.
The art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann was born in Stendal, and the Winckelmann Museum documents his life and his influence on the study of antiquity. On festival days the quiet cobbled streets fill with music and the smell of food, which gives the town a very different face from a normal weekday.
Eating, exploring and day trips
Food at the festival is straightforward: sausage, grilled meat, fish sandwiches, waffles and regional beer. For a local souvenir, look for Baumkuchen, the layered spit cake closely tied to the Altmark and to Salzwedel in particular.
If you have a spare half day, rent a bike. The flat Elbe landscape east of Stendal around Tangermünde is popular for cycling, and Tangermünde itself has a castle, a town wall and a harbour on the river. Regional trains also reach Magdeburg and Salzwedel in reasonable time.
Public holidays and bridge days around 9 to 11 June 2028
The festival weekend begins on a Friday, so you can arrive after work and spend Saturday and Sunday on site with no vacation days at all. A relaxed arrival on Friday morning costs one day. Nearby holidays: Whit Monday fell on 5 June 2028, the week before, and Corpus Christi on Thursday 15 June is not a public holiday in Saxony-Anhalt. There is therefore no bridge day in the state that week.
Anyone from Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg should remember that Corpus Christi is a holiday at home, so a trip to Stendal that week would cost fewer days if you start from there on Thursday evening. Within Saxony-Anhalt, the plan is simple: one day for a long weekend, two days if you want to stretch it to Thursday.
Who should go and what to prepare
The Rolandfest is best for visitors who like small-town festivals, local bands and an uncomplicated weekend in the Altmark. It is easy for families, but not a destination for travellers who want a big-name headliner.
Book accommodation as soon as the dates are confirmed, because the old town has only a limited number of beds. Bring a light rain jacket and some cash, and check the organiser's page a few weeks beforehand for the final programme and any road closures.
