Rutenfest Ravensburg

24 July 2026 – 28 July 2026
Ravensburg, Baden-Württemberg

Oberschwaben's biggest children's and heritage festival, with parades, student theatre and fireworks, celebrated for centuries. Less famous than the big beer festivals, but a good way to see regional tradition without the crowds.

What the Rutenfest is

The Rutenfest is the big annual heritage and children's festival of Ravensburg in Upper Swabia, in southern Baden-Württemberg not far from Lake Constance. Our event data describes it as Oberschwaben's biggest children's and heritage festival, with parades, student theatre and fireworks, celebrated for centuries. The 2026 edition is listed as confirmed, from Friday 24 July to Tuesday 28 July 2026, with the date taken from a regional newspaper's list of important local dates.

It is a local festival first and a tourist attraction second. That is its charm: you see a town celebrating its own traditions rather than an event designed around visitors. The dates are confirmed, but the detailed programme is published by the city, so check the official site for the timetable of the parades and performances.

Dates and calendar in 2026

The festival runs for five days, from Friday 24 July to Tuesday 28 July 2026. That includes one full weekend (Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July) and two weekdays, Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 July. In Baden-Württemberg there is no public holiday during these days, so for many working people the Monday and Tuesday are ordinary working days.

For visitors, this means the weekend is the easiest time to attend, while the weekday days are better for those who have time off. The late July timing also puts the festival in the summer, with long daylight hours. We recommend checking the school holiday dates of your own state, because the festival sits close to the start of summer holidays in several states.

Character and what to see

The festival centres on parades and local performances. Historic costume groups walk through the old town, children take part in school-based events, and the programme includes the student theatre and fireworks mentioned in the event description. The tone is more like a town celebration than a commercial fair.

Ravensburg's old town is itself worth the trip. The Mehlsack tower dominates the skyline, and the Veitsburg hill gives a view over the town and towards Lake Constance. There are medieval gates and towers, narrow streets with shops and cafés, and a pleasant pedestrian centre that is easy to explore on foot.

What to eat and the wider region

Regional cuisine in Upper Swabia includes Spätzle, Maultaschen, Käsespätzle and Zwiebelkuchen, and fruit schnapps and cider are part of the local drink culture. At a festival you will find the usual sausages, roast meat and sweets. We do not quote prices.

If you have more than a day, combine the festival with the Lake Constance region. Friedrichshafen with its Zeppelin Museum and Lindau are within reach by train, and Ravensburg is also known for the Ravensburger Spieleland leisure park in nearby Meckenbeuren, which suits families with children.

Getting there and where to stay

Ravensburg lies on the rail line between Ulm and Lake Constance, with regional connections to Friedrichshafen and Lindau, and connections to Stuttgart via Ulm. The journey from Stuttgart takes roughly two to three hours depending on connections. By car, the town lies near the A96 and A81 motorways, and parking in the centre is limited during festival days.

The number of hotels in the old town is limited, so book early if you want to stay in the centre during the festival. Alternatives include nearby towns on the lake, Weingarten and Friedrichshafen, but check train times for evening returns.

Public holidays and vacation days in Baden-Württemberg

There is no public holiday between 24 and 28 July 2026 in Baden-Württemberg. A visit that covers the whole festival, from Friday to Tuesday, would take 3 vacation days (Friday 24, Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 July). A weekend-only visit costs none, and a Friday evening arrival with the weekend costs at most 1 day.

Because the festival ends on Tuesday 28 July, the following days are normal working days. If you plan to continue the trip to Lake Constance afterwards, add days on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July, which would make a total of 5 vacation days for a 9-day trip from Friday 24 July to Sunday 2 August. Check the school holidays in your area, since some states start their summer break around this time.

Tips and who it suits

The Rutenfest suits families, people interested in regional traditions and visitors who like local festivals without a heavy tourist crowd. It is less suitable if you want a large commercial fairground or international attractions. Because the festival is mainly for locals, the programme is mainly in German.

Check the parade routes and times in advance, arrive early to get a good spot, bring water and sun protection, and plan to use public transport. If you stay overnight, book your accommodation as soon as the dates are fixed in your calendar.
