The Rutenfest at a glance

Every summer the old imperial city of Ravensburg in Upper Swabia dedicates a long weekend to the Rutenfest, its children's and heritage festival. It is a local tradition that mixes processions, costumes, events for schoolchildren and the lively atmosphere of a town festival. Visitors from elsewhere in Germany or abroad will find it a chance to see a custom that residents genuinely care about.

The 2028 edition is the one covered here. Because it lies a long way ahead, everything below about timing should be read as a planning aid, not as a final programme.

2028 dates and their status

The listed period is Friday 21 July to Tuesday 25 July 2028. This is an estimate based on how earlier editions were scheduled, namely a Friday to Tuesday stretch in the second half of July. The organiser has not announced official dates for 2028, so nothing here is confirmed. Check the website of the city of Ravensburg and the festival organisers before you commit to any trip.

One practical consequence: a date that is only an estimate can move by a week in either direction. If you are building a holiday around the festival, choose flexible hotel and rail tariffs for now and fix the details once the official announcement appears.

History and local character

The Rutenfest is part of the southern German tradition of Heimatfeste that celebrate a town and its children. The name goes back to the Ruten, the rods linked to local custom. The festival has been handed down through many generations, which is why it feels familiar to locals and a little mysterious to guests.

Ravensburg supplies a fitting backdrop. Towers, town gates and old merchant houses line the centre, and the compact old town means that processions and gatherings are close to each other. The tone is relaxed and family oriented rather than loud.

Things to see, do and eat

Between festival events, walk up to the Mehlsack tower for a view across the roofs and, on clear days, towards the Alps and the lake. Stroll the lanes near the Veitsburg, visit the market squares, and give yourself time to simply watch the town. For families, the Ravensburger museum is a pleasant addition.

For food, look for Maultaschen, Spätzle and Kässpätzle, grilled sausages and fish from Lake Constance. A glass of local Most or a Swabian beer rounds off a summer afternoon.

Getting there and where to stay

Regional trains on the Südbahn link Ravensburg with Ulm in one direction and Friedrichshafen in the other. Friedrichshafen has a small airport and ferry connections across the lake, while Stuttgart and Zurich are the larger airports within reach for long-distance travellers. Drivers should plan for limited parking near the old town on festival days.

July is high season around Lake Constance, so accommodation in Ravensburg tends to fill early. Weingarten, Wangen or Friedrichshafen are sensible alternatives, each with a train connection, and booking a flexible rate protects you if the dates move.

Public holidays and vacation days in 2028

The estimated run starts on Friday 21 July and ends on Tuesday 25 July 2028. Taking part for the full stretch costs two vacation days, Monday 24 July and Tuesday 25 July, plus perhaps a half day on the Friday. In Baden-Württemberg the last public holiday before the summer is Corpus Christi, which in 2028 falls on 15 June, and the next is German Unity Day on 3 October, a Tuesday. There is therefore no bridge day in the festival window. Summer school holidays usually begin in late July, so check the official calendar for traffic expectations.

The festival suits families, day trippers from the lake region and anyone who enjoys regional customs. Pack comfortable shoes and a light jacket for the evening, and verify dates with the organiser before leaving.

Since the dates are only estimated, hold off on non-refundable bookings and read the city's announcements in the spring before the festival.
