What Schlachte-Zauber is

Schlachte-Zauber is a Christmas market on the Schlachte, the promenade along the Weser river in the centre of Bremen. It sits beside the larger Christmas market near the town hall and offers a different setting: stalls by the water, a maritime backdrop and, as it is usually described, a market with a medieval or historic character. The exact stall mix changes, so look at the current programme rather than expecting a fixed formula.

For 2027 our data lists the market from Monday 22 November to Thursday 23 December, just over four weeks.

Dates in 2027 and what they rest on

The 2027 dates have not been published. The window is derived from 2025 and 2026: the market usually opens on the Monday after Totensonntag and ends on 23 December. Totensonntag falls on 21 November 2027, so Monday 22 November is the expected start, and 23 December is a Thursday.

This is an estimate. Opening hours, closing days and any entry arrangements belong to the organiser. A published Bremen tourism document covers the market together with the town-hall Christmas market, so check Bremen's tourism pages for the confirmed schedule before booking.

Character and what to do

The setting by the river is what separates it from the other markets in town. Walking along the Schlachte at dusk, with the water on one side and the lights on the other, is the main pleasure. Combine it with the town hall market, where the Roland statue and the UNESCO-listed town hall frame the square, and with the Böttcherstraße and the Schnoor quarter.

Bremen is compact, so you can see the main sights on foot in a day. If you have a second day, the Bremen Town Musicians statue and a stroll through the Viertel district give you a feel of the city beyond the markets. Time spent by the water in winter is best in the evening, when the lights are on.

Food and drink

Mulled wine, grilled sausages, roasted nuts and sweet pastries are standard fare. In Bremen you can try regional dishes such as Kohl und Pinkel, Knipp and Bremer Klaben, a dense fruit loaf. Along the Schlachte there are also restaurants and beer gardens that stay open in the cold months, which is helpful if you want a warm place to sit. Book dinner ahead in December.

Getting there and where to stay

The Schlachte is in the city centre, a short walk from the old town and about fifteen to twenty minutes on foot from the main station. Trams and buses run through the centre. Bremen's airport has a tram link, and rail connections from Hamburg, Hanover and Cologne are frequent.

Hotels in the old town and near the river are convenient, though December rates can be high. If you prefer quieter streets, look at the Viertel district, which has good transport links.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027

No Bremen public holiday falls within the 2027 window. Reformation Day on Sunday 31 October is a holiday in Bremen but sits on a Sunday and ends before the market opens. Christmas Day, Saturday 25 December, and Boxing Day, Sunday 26 December, come after the market closes on Thursday 23 December.

For a weekend visit, Friday 26 November to Sunday 28 November or Friday 3 to Sunday 5 December costs one vacation day or none. The market's last day is a Thursday, so a farewell visit on 23 December takes one vacation day if you do not work from home, and with Friday 24 December as an additional vacation day you get a four-day stretch up to Sunday 26 December for two days. Many employers give 24 December off, so ask before you plan.

Tips and who it suits

Schlachte-Zauber suits couples and friends who want a Christmas market with a view of the water. Dress warmly because the river wind can be sharp, and wear sturdy shoes. Check the Bremen tourism pages for confirmed dates and hours before travelling, because the 2027 window is only an estimate.
