What the Hannover Schützenfest is

The Schützenfest Hannover calls itself the largest marksmen's festival in the world. It joins a funfair on the Schützenplatz with the traditions of the shooting clubs: a long parade through the city, brass bands, tent evenings and fireworks. Entry to the grounds has been free in recent editions, which the event data confirms for 2027.

For 2028 the situation is different. The date has not been published, and the dates in this planner are an estimate: Friday 7 July to Sunday 16 July 2028. Treat it as a guide until the city confirms the schedule.

Dates and how they are set

The festival usually begins on the first Friday in July and lasts ten days. In 2028, the first Friday in July is the 7th, since 1 July is a Saturday. That gives an estimated run from Friday 7 July to Sunday 16 July, with Fridays on 7 and 14 July, Saturdays on 8 and 15 July, Sundays on 9 and 16 July and four weekdays, Monday 10 to Thursday 13 July, between them.

If the city keeps its usual pattern, the real dates will match. But no announcement exists yet, so check the official pages in the months before the festival, and only then book hotels and trains.

History and character

This is a festival with centuries of history in Hannover, in which marksmen's clubs from the city and the region take part in historic uniforms. The parade is the clearest expression of that side, while the rides and food stalls provide a modern funfair around it.

The character is communal: clubs, colleagues and families meet at long tables in the tents. A visitor from elsewhere gets a taste of a very Lower Saxon summer custom.

What to see, do and eat

Plan to see the parade, whose exact day and route the city announces with the daily programme, and one evening with fireworks if the programme lists one. The Schützenplatz offers rides for children and adults, game stalls and large tents.

Eat Bratwurst, fries, fish rolls and sweets on the grounds. In the city, the New Town Hall, the Herrenhausen Gardens and the Maschsee fill a day, and the Sprengel Museum and the Landesmuseum are options if the weather is poor.

Getting there and where to stay

Use Hannover Hauptbahnhof for rail arrival and the Stadtbahn or buses for the last stretch to the Schützenplatz. Driving is possible but parking near the grounds is limited during the festival.

Hotels in Hannover are busier at festival time and during trade fairs. As the dates are estimated, keep your booking flexible or wait for confirmation.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2028

No public holiday in Lower Saxony falls in the estimated period, 7 to 16 July 2028. Whit Monday is on 5 June, and German Unity Day and Reformation Day follow later, on Tuesdays 3 October and 31 October. So any time off comes from annual leave.

A Friday-to-Sunday weekend takes one vacation day. Covering both weekends, from Friday 7 July to Friday 14 July, takes six days, the two Fridays and the four weekdays in between, Monday 10 to Thursday 13. A single weekend plus a weekday evening takes one day or none. Recalculate with the real weekdays if the date turns out different.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits families, clubs and anyone who enjoys a traditional Volksfest with a long local history. The best strategy is flexibility: watch for the official announcement before you commit.

Take a light rain jacket, because July weather can change, and leave early if you plan to take public transport after a fireworks evening.
