What the Schwerin Castle Festival is
The Schlossfestspiele Schwerin is the summer festival of the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, staged in and around Schwerin Castle on its island in the Schweriner See. The castle is the seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, together with its gardens and surroundings, forms the Schwerin residence ensemble that was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2024. A festival in such a setting combines theatre, music and a lakeside summer evening.
For 2027, the status is estimated. The event data states that the programme has not been published and that the period is based on previous years, so check the Staatstheater's website before you plan around any specific performance.
Dates and how they are set
The planner shows Friday 28 May to Sunday 18 July 2027, a run of 52 days with eight Fridays, eight Saturdays and eight Sundays. The long span reflects the tradition of a festival from the end of May to mid-July, but in practice not every day has a performance. Individual dates, titles and the box-office opening will be set by the theatre.
Because no 2027 programme exists yet, do not assume that the window above means daily shows. A typical visitor picks one or two evenings once the schedule is out and books tickets then.
History and character
Schwerin is one of the smallest state capitals in Germany, yet it has a grand setting, with a fairytale castle, an old town, several lakes and large parks. The festival draws on this scenery. The Staatstheater is the region's main stage for opera, drama and ballet, and its summer festival offers its work in a more open and festive form.
Expect an evening mood rather than a hectic mass event: seated audiences, summer clothes and a strong dependence on the weather for any open-air performance. As the repertoire for 2027 is not announced, details such as venue and genre remain open.
What to see, do and eat
Besides the performance, make time for the castle museum and its state rooms, the castle gardens and the walk along the lake. A boat trip on the Schweriner See gives a different view of the castle, and the old town has cafes and small shops.
Regional food in this part of Germany includes fresh fish from the lakes and the Baltic, game in season and, for dessert, fruit cakes. Choose a lakeside restaurant for a pre-theatre dinner and book ahead on performance evenings.
Getting there and where to stay
Schwerin is connected by regional trains to Hamburg, Lübeck, Rostock and Berlin, and the station is a short bus or tram ride, or a walk, from the old town and the castle. A car is helpful for exploring the wider lake district but not for the festival itself.
Hotels in the old town put you within walking distance of the castle. Because the dates and programme are not yet fixed, book flexible or wait until performances are announced. Smaller towns nearby offer cheaper options.
Planning around holidays and bridge days in 2027
In the estimated window, 28 May to 18 July 2027, there is no state holiday in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Ascension Day (Thursday 6 May) and Whit Monday (17 May) lie just before it. Whit Sunday is 16 May, so the first festival weekend, 28 to 30 May, follows a long Whitsun weekend. Corpus Christi on 27 May is not a holiday in this state.
A Friday-to-Sunday trip takes one vacation day, and a Saturday-evening show with a Sunday return takes none. Since the run covers eight weekends, you can pick whichever one fits your calendar once the programme is out. Check school holiday dates in your own state if you travel with children.
Tips and who it suits
The festival suits culture lovers and couples looking for an evening that combines performance with a beautiful setting. For open-air evenings, take a light jacket and a rain cover.
Since the programme is not yet published, bookmark the theatre's page and set a reminder to look again in spring 2027. Treat the dates here as a guide only.
