Eisenach's Sommergewinn in 2028
Every spring Eisenach marks the end of winter with Sommergewinn, a festival centred on a procession and the symbolic burning of Winter. The event data describes it as one of the oldest spring festivals in Germany and notes its status as intangible cultural heritage since 2014. The town below the Wartburg is the stage, and the people of Eisenach are the main actors.
This page looks at the 2028 edition. The dates come from the rule that ties the festival to Laetare Sunday, and no organiser has confirmed them yet, so it is a forecast and not a programme.
Estimated dates and the Laetare rule
The planner shows Friday 24 March to Sunday 2 April 2028. Easter Sunday in 2028 is 16 April, which puts Laetare Sunday, three weeks earlier, on 26 March. That is the third day of the estimated window, and the festival then continues for another week. By comparison, in 2027 the Laetare Sunday falls on 7 March, three weeks earlier in the calendar year, so the 2028 festival comes about three weeks later than the 2027 one.
The status is estimated. The clocks also change to summer time on the night of 25 to 26 March 2028, which means the parade Sunday has one hour less sleep for everybody, a small practical detail for early risers. Check the official page for the parade time.
Spring customs and the town beneath the Wartburg
Spring-welcoming customs once existed in many German villages and towns, and the Eisenach Sommergewinn is one of those that survived with a large public procession. Its recognition as intangible cultural heritage reflects that continuity, and its date, tied to the church calendar, means it moves from year to year.
The Wartburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominates the skyline, and Bach and Luther are the two names most visitors associate with the town. The Bachhaus is a museum about the composer's family and music, while the castle is where Luther lived under a false identity and translated the New Testament. Eisenach also has a long history of vehicle manufacture.
Food, walks and what else to see
Local food leans towards Thuringian staples: bratwurst, dumplings, roast pork and hearty soups, plus coffee and cake in the town's cafés. Festival days normally bring additional food and drink stands to the squares.
With ten days available, you can arrange sightseeing on the quiet weekdays and attend the parade on the weekend. Walk the Drachenschlucht gorge if it is open and the path is dry, then take the footpath up to the Wartburg. A day trip to Erfurt, Gotha or Mühlhausen fits easily by regional train.
Public holidays and bridge days in Thuringia, 2028
The estimated window contains two weekends, 25 and 26 March and 1 and 2 April. Laetare Sunday and the parade fall on the first one. If you leave on Friday morning, you spend one vacation day, and if you arrive on Saturday, none. No public holiday occurs in the festival window.
The Easter holidays follow soon: Good Friday is 14 April and Easter Monday is 17 April 2028. If you want to combine a festival visit with an Easter break, you must plan two separate trips, since the gap between 2 April and 14 April is nearly two weeks. Taking Monday 10 to Thursday 13 April costs four vacation days for a ten-day break from Saturday 8 April to Monday 17 April.
Tips and who it suits
Sommergewinn suits visitors who like local traditions and photography, as well as families who want a parade without the crowds of a major carnival. The festival has the rhythm of a community event, with quiet and busy stretches.
Bring layers, since late March in the Thuringian Forest region can be very cold or sunny within the same day. Confirm the parade date and time with the organiser before you travel.
