What the Stuttgart Spring Festival is

The Stuttgarter Frühlingsfest is the spring counterpart of the autumn Volksfest, held on the same Cannstatter Wasen beside the Neckar. It offers beer tents, fairground rides and regional food over roughly three weeks. According to our event data it is the smaller sibling of the autumn festival.

Dates for 2027: estimated

The status is estimated, meaning the organiser has not published the 2027 dates. For orientation, the 2026 festival ran from 18 April to 10 May, and we carried that three week pattern forward to the matching Saturday and Sunday in 2027.

The festival starts on a Saturday in our data. Because Easter 2027 is early, on 28 March, the opening falls well after the holiday weekend. If the organiser chooses a different start, the dates will shift; check the official site once it posts the programme.

Character, sights and food

Where the autumn Volksfest is a big public occasion, the spring festival is more relaxed. The tents are still lively, but crowds are usually thinner and the weather can be changeable, which means jackets are as important as tickets. Locals treat it as a welcome sign that the open-air season is back.

Many of the attractions are the same as in autumn, so it is a fair way to experience the Wasen without the peak crowds.

Try a Swabian meal in a tent, such as Maultaschen, Spätzle or roast pork, and sample the festival beer. Ride the Ferris wheel for a view of the Neckar valley, and wander through the fairground. Sweet snacks such as roasted almonds and gingerbread hearts are the usual treats.

After the festival, a walk in Bad Cannstatt, with its spa tradition and thermal baths, makes a pleasant contrast to the noise of the fair.

Getting there and where to stay

Use the S-Bahn or Stadtbahn from the Stuttgart main station to Bad Cannstatt, and walk over to the grounds. Parking is limited, so public transport is the realistic option. If you are staying overnight, Stuttgart centre is convenient, and prices are usually calmer than in autumn.

Nearby towns like Esslingen or Waiblingen provide quiet alternatives with a direct rail link.

Public holidays and vacation days in Baden-Württemberg, 2027

Baden-Württemberg has a public holiday on Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt), which in 2027 is Thursday 6 May, inside the festival period. May Day, 1 May, falls on a Saturday and so adds no day off. Whit Monday on 17 May and Corpus Christi on Thursday 27 May come after the festival.

The Ascension Thursday creates a classic bridge: taking Friday 7 May as one vacation day gives four days off, Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 May, ending on the festival's last day. A visit on the opening weekend, 17 and 18 April, needs no leave. A mid-festival weekday would cost one vacation day, and three consecutive days such as Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 April would cost three.

Pick the opening weekend for ceremony and crowds, or a weekday afternoon for a calmer fair. The festival suits friends, couples and families.

If you are building a longer trip around the festival, Stuttgart has plenty to offer outside the Wasen: the Neckar promenade, the vineyards on the hills above the city and the mineral baths of Bad Cannstatt. The Ascension bridge of 6 to 9 May is the likeliest time for visitors from other regions to travel in, so reserve your room before then. April evenings can be cold, and a waterproof jacket is more useful than a scarf.
