The 2028 spring festival

The Frühlingsfest in Stuttgart fills the Cannstatter Wasen each spring with tents, rides and Swabian food. Our 2028 entry runs from Saturday 15 April to Sunday 7 May, 23 days, so it is the same length as the 2027 estimate but starts two days earlier in the calendar.

It is an open-air event, and April weather can swing from sun to rain within a day.

Status: estimated, and why Easter matters

The dates are estimated because the organiser had not announced the 2028 programme when we checked. We followed the recent three week pattern. A feature of 2028 is that Easter falls on 16 April, so the festival would open on Easter Saturday, which is a strong draw for holiday visitors.

That overlap is a reason to treat the estimate cautiously: an organiser may shift the opening to avoid or to use the Easter weekend. Confirm the start on the official page before you plan your travel around it.

Character, sights and food

The spring fair has a lighter mood than the autumn Volksfest. Tents are less crowded on weekdays, and the fairground is friendly to families. For many Stuttgart residents it marks the first big outdoor event of the year.

If you see both festivals, you will notice that the spring edition feels more local and a little slower.

Expect classic festival food: roast chicken, sausages, pretzels, Maultaschen and Spätzle with lentils in some tents. Sweet stands offer candied nuts and chocolate-covered fruit. Rides include a Ferris wheel and attractions for smaller children.

Away from the Wasen, the Mineral baths in Bad Cannstatt and the Wilhelma zoological-botanical garden in Stuttgart make good companions to a festival day, especially with children.

Getting there and where to stay

The S-Bahn and Stadtbahn lines stop at Bad Cannstatt, a short walk from the Wasen. Because Easter weekend is popular for visits to Stuttgart, book hotels early, or choose Esslingen or Ludwigsburg as a base.

Public holidays and vacation days in Baden-Württemberg, 2028

In 2028 Good Friday is 14 April, Easter Sunday 16 April and Easter Monday 17 April, which is a Baden-Württemberg holiday inside the festival period. May Day, 1 May, falls on a Monday inside the festival. Ascension Day is 25 May, after the festival ends on 7 May.

The opening weekend of Saturday 15 to Monday 17 April gives a free Easter Monday, so a visit costs no vacation days. The weekend of 29 April to 1 May is also a three day block with no leave needed, thanks to Monday 1 May. A visit with the whole week from Tuesday 18 to Friday 21 April would need four vacation days and links two weekends into a ten day break from Friday 14 April through Sunday 23 April.

Tips and who it suits

It suits visitors who want a relaxed fair at a quieter time of year. Aim for the Easter Monday or May Day afternoons only if you are comfortable with larger crowds.

Treat the dates as provisional until confirmed, and keep bookings flexible.

A long Easter break is a good time for a family trip to Stuttgart, so combine the fair with the zoo, the Neckar and the city's museums. Weekdays between 18 and 21 April are typically calmer at the Wasen than the Easter weekend itself. If rain is forecast, plan indoor time first and visit the tents later in the afternoon. Because the dates are estimated, avoid prepaying non-refundable packages until the organiser publishes its schedule. Also remember that Easter timetables on trains and trams are reduced on some days.
