What the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market is
The WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt is one of the best-known Christmas markets in Berlin. It sets up on one of the city's most elegant squares, framed by the French and German cathedrals and the Konzerthaus, and mixes craft stalls, food, drinks and a stage programme. In recent years an entrance fee has been charged, so check the current ticket terms with the organiser before you go. It is more a refined, central market than a rustic one.
For 2027 our data lists a long window from Monday 22 November to Friday 31 December, which would mean about six weeks of opening.
Dates in 2027 and how reliable they are
The 2027 dates have not been published. The window is derived from the pattern of earlier years, in which the market opens on the Monday after Totensonntag and runs until New Year's Eve. Totensonntag, the last Sunday before Advent, falls on 21 November 2027, which gives Monday 22 November as the likely opening.
Treat this as an estimate. Daily opening hours, closing days such as Christmas Eve, and any special programme are decided by the organiser. Check the Berlin city page on Christmas markets or the market's own site shortly before the opening, and avoid non-refundable bookings until the dates appear.
Character and what to do
The setting is the draw. The square is among the most photographed in the city, and in the evening the lights on the cathedral towers and the stalls create a calm, festive picture. Plan a visit at dusk, when the lights come on, and expect crowds on weekends. Stage acts, small concerts and craft demonstrations form part of the offer, though the specific line-up changes yearly.
Combine the market with a walk along Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate, a visit to the Museum Island or a look at other Berlin markets. The city has dozens, from small neighbourhood markets to large ones, so you can compare atmospheres on a long weekend.
Food and drink
Typical Christmas market fare applies: Glühwein, hot chocolate, roasted almonds, Bratwurst, crêpes and sweets. Stalls at this market lean toward a more upscale selection than at a simple neighbourhood market, so prices may be higher. Berlin's restaurants nearby fill up in December, so book a table for dinner if you plan to combine the market with a sit-down meal.
Getting there and where to stay
The square is in central Berlin, close to U-Bahn stations Stadtmitte and Französische Straße. Arrive by Hauptbahnhof or BER and continue by public transport; driving into the centre in December is slow and parking is expensive.
Hotels in Mitte are the most convenient but price-sensitive in the weeks before Christmas. Book early, or choose an area such as Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg or Charlottenburg with good train links.
Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2027
In 2027 both Christmas holidays fall on a weekend: 25 December is a Saturday and 26 December a Sunday, so you lose no working-day holiday to them. Berlin has no holiday on 1 January 2028 either, which is a Saturday. Christmas Eve, Friday 24 December, and New Year's Eve, Friday 31 December, are not statutory holidays, though many employers close or release staff.
For a classic market visit, a weekend from Friday 3 or 10 December costs one vacation day or none. For a long festive break, take Monday 27 to Friday 31 December, five vacation days, and you are away from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January, nine days. If Friday 24 December is also a working day for you, add it and you are off for ten days with six vacation days. The market is estimated to run to 31 December, but check whether it closes early or stays open on holidays.
Tips and who it suits
The market suits couples, friends and visitors who want a polished, central setting. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends. Dress warmly, bring a card as well as some cash, and check the organiser's site for entry rules and hours once the 2027 dates are published.
