What the Bremen Freimarkt is

The Bremer Freimarkt is the big autumn folk festival of the Hanseatic city of Bremen, held on the Bürgerweide grounds close to the main station. According to our event data, it is one of Germany's oldest folk festivals, first documented in 1035, and today the largest in northern Germany, with a major parade. The 2026 edition is listed as confirmed, from Friday 16 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, a run of 17 days.

The festival mixes a large fairground with rides and food stalls, beer tents and a long local tradition. The dates are confirmed, but the opening ceremony, the parade day and the daily hours are set by the organiser, so check the official page for the programme before you plan your trip.

Dates and the calendar in 2026

The Freimarkt opens on Friday 16 October and runs through three weekends: 17 and 18 October, 24 and 25 October, and the closing weekend of 31 October and 1 November. The final day is Sunday 1 November. The two-week-plus length means you can pick a quieter weekday or one of the weekends without any rush.

Saturday 31 October 2026 is Reformation Day, which is a public holiday in Bremen. Since it falls on a Saturday, it does not give an extra day off, but it does mean shops are closed that day and the city is likely to be busy. All Saints' Day on 1 November is not a public holiday in Bremen. The event description notes that the festival's two-week run is more relaxed than Oktoberfest's packed schedule.

Character and what to see

The Freimarkt has the feel of a traditional city fair: rides for all ages, game stalls, sweets and a lively evening atmosphere. The parade is a major event, and the opening days are marked by local customs. Because the grounds are close to the main station, access is easy and there is no need for a long trek.

A visit can be combined with Bremen's old town. The market square with the town hall and the Roland statue is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Böttcherstraße, a short brick-built lane, is nearby. The Town Musicians sculpture next to the town hall is a favourite photo spot, and the Schnoor quarter is a maze of small lanes with shops and cafés.

What to eat and drink

Fairground treats are the main attraction: roasted almonds, Lebkuchenherzen, candy floss and grilled sausages. In Bremen itself, regional dishes include Kohl und Pinkel (kale with smoked sausage), which is a northern German autumn and winter dish, and fish rolls. We do not quote prices.

Bremen is also known for its coffee tradition and for beer brewed locally. A café stop in the old town between visits to the fairground is a good way to spread out the day.

Getting there and where to stay

Bremen is well connected by rail, with direct links to Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Berlin and Amsterdam. The Bürgerweide is within walking distance of the main station, and the city has a good tram and bus network. Driving is less convenient since parking is limited on busy festival days.

Hotels fill up on weekends, especially the opening and closing weekends. Booking early is advisable. Smaller hotels in the old town and in districts such as Findorff offer an alternative to the large hotels near the station.

Public holidays, bridge days and vacation days in Bremen

In 2026 there are no weekday public holidays within the Freimarkt period. Reformation Day, which is a holiday in Bremen, falls on a Saturday (31 October), and 1 November is a Sunday. That means no bridge days, so a longer stay costs ordinary vacation days.

Count the weekdays: Monday 19 to Friday 23 October and Monday 26 to Friday 30 October make 10 working days. The whole festival, Friday 16 October to Sunday 1 November, would use 11 vacation days including the opening Friday. A single weekend trip, for example Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October, costs 1 vacation day, and a weekend without leaving work early costs none.

Tips and who it suits

The Freimarkt suits families, couples and friends who enjoy a classic fair with a regional character. It is less suitable if you dislike noise and crowds, since weekend evenings are busy. Weekdays in the afternoon are calmer and often better for families with small children.

Check the official programme for family days and special events, bring some cash for small stalls and wear weatherproof clothing, since late October in northern Germany can be wet and windy.
