What Cranger Kirmes is

Cranger Kirmes is one of the biggest folk festivals in Germany, held every August in Herne-Crange in the Ruhr area. It combines a large funfair with rides, food stalls and beer tents, plus a festive parade and a fireworks display. The planner lists the 2027 edition from Thursday 5 August to Sunday 15 August 2027, eleven days in total.

The festival is a regional institution. People from across the Ruhr area come as families, groups of friends and colleagues, which gives it the unpretentious, communal feel typical of the region.

How the dates are set and their status

The 2027 date has not been published yet. The dates in the planner are an estimate based on the 2026 pattern, which is why the status is estimated. The festival normally runs eleven days in August, starting on a Thursday and ending on the second Sunday after, and the planner follows that shape.

Treat the window as a good guess rather than a promise. The organisers publish opening hours, the parade date and the fireworks nights closer to the event, and those are the details to check before you commit to a hotel or a day off.

History and character

The Crange fair is often described as having medieval roots, with an origin commonly dated to 1435 and linked to a horse market. Over the centuries it grew from a regional market into a modern funfair, but a few traditional elements remain, including the opening ceremony and the festive parade.

Today the festival is about rides, crowds and long summer evenings. Families come during the day, and the atmosphere shifts later toward younger groups and the beer tents.

What to do and eat

The main draws are the many rides, from family carousels to fast thrill rides, plus the parade and fireworks. Food stands offer classic fairground fare: bratwurst, chips, Reibekuchen with apple sauce, roasted almonds and sweet treats. Beer tents provide a seat and live music for the evening.

Because the fairground is large, set a meeting point for your group and check the opening times of rides. Weekday afternoons are calmer than weekend evenings, which suits visitors with young children.

Getting there and where to stay

Herne lies between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen and is served by regional trains, trams and buses. Visitors usually travel to Herne or a neighbouring station and continue by local public transport, which is recommended because parking around the fairground is limited on busy days.

Accommodation in Herne itself is modest, so many visitors stay in Bochum, Essen, Gelsenkirchen or Dortmund and commute in. The Ruhr area's dense rail network makes this practical, but check late-night connections before the final evening of a visit.

Holidays and vacation days in August 2027

The weekdays are Thursday 5 August and Sunday 15 August 2027, with the weekend of 7 and 8 August and the final weekend inside the window. North Rhine-Westphalia has no public holiday in August, and the Assumption holiday on 15 August is not observed in this state, so the final Sunday is an ordinary day off.

A weekend visit costs one vacation day at most: take Friday 6 August for a Friday to Sunday stay. Covering the full festival on working days would use seven vacation days (5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 August), while a long weekend from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 August needs two. School holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia may overlap, which raises prices and traffic, so check the 2027 holiday calendar.

Tips and who it suits

Cranger Kirmes suits families, groups of friends and anyone who enjoys fairground rides and a lively crowd. It is less attractive if you dislike noise and queues, or if you want a quiet cultural trip in the Ruhr area.

Bring cash for small stands, wear shoes you can stand in for hours, and keep valuables close in the crowd. Since the dates are an estimate, hold off on non-refundable bookings until the organiser confirms the 2027 programme.
