What the Striezelmarkt is

The Dresdner Striezelmarkt is billed as Germany's oldest documented Christmas market, first mentioned in 1434. It takes place on the Altmarkt in the middle of Dresden, the capital of Saxony, and is known for its large Christmas pyramid, which the organisers describe as the world's largest walk-through Christmas pyramid. The name comes from the Striezel, an old Saxon word for the yeasted fruit loaf that later became the Dresden Christstollen.

For visitors the market combines a long history with the full range of Advent atmosphere: wooden huts, handmade crafts from the Erzgebirge, music and a lot of mulled wine.

Dates for 2027 and how reliable they are

This planner shows the 2027 edition as running from Wednesday 24 November to Friday 24 December 2027 and marks it as estimated. That is an honest statement of uncertainty: the dates are projected from the pattern of earlier years and from the city's most recent tender text, not from an announcement for 2027. The city usually fixes the exact period and opening hours later, and it can differ by a few days. Before you book anything, check the official Dresden market pages. Opening hours also vary by day, and the last day, Christmas Eve, normally ends earlier than other days.

Treat the dates here as a planning window, not as a promise.

History and character

The market's story reaches back to the late Middle Ages, when the Saxon rulers allowed a one-day market for the purchase of meat for Christmas. Over the centuries it grew into the long Advent market of today. Dresden's Christmas culture is heavily tied to baking: the Dresden Christstollen is a protected regional product, and the city holds an annual Stollen festival with a giant loaf during the market season. Ask the organiser for the 2027 date rather than assuming it.

The mood is traditional and a little crowded, especially on weekends and the first Advent weekend, which in 2027 is 27 and 28 November.

What to see, do and eat

Walk through the pyramid, browse stalls for Erzgebirge candle arches, nutcrackers and incense smokers, and try a slice of Stollen from a local baker. Another local sweet is the Pflaumentoffel, a figure made of dried plums that has long been a Dresden souvenir. Savoury options include Bratwurst, potato dishes and a roasted almond cone. Alongside the main market, the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Semperoper are all within a short walk and well worth seeing in the early dark.

On a cold evening the Kreuzkirche beside the Altmarkt hosts the Dresden Kreuzchor in its Advent programme; check the church schedule for tickets.

Getting there and where to stay

Dresden Hauptbahnhof has direct long-distance trains from Berlin and Leipzig, and the Altmarkt is reachable by tram or on foot in about fifteen to twenty minutes. Driving is awkward on busy market evenings, so a park-and-ride or a hotel with parking is wiser. Accommodation in the old town and new town fills up fast around Advent weekends, so book early and keep a flexible cancellation option.

Staying a little outside the centre and using the tram is usually calmer and good value.

Planning around holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027

The first date of the planner window is a Wednesday, so a mid-week visit right at the opening takes two weekdays off at most. In Saxony, the Buß- und Bettag (Day of Repentance) is a public holiday on Wednesday 17 November 2027, a week before the market opens, and Reformation Day, 31 October, falls on a Sunday this year. Between the opening and Christmas there is no weekday public holiday in Saxony: 25 and 26 December are Saturday and Sunday.

A first-Advent weekend trip, Friday 26 to Sunday 28 November, costs one vacation day. A full week would cost five. The Christmas Eve end falls on a Friday, so a combined trip with the holidays is possible: take Friday 24 December and Monday 27 to Friday 31 December, six days in total, for ten days off from 24 December to 2 January 2028.

Tips and who it suits

The market suits couples, families and anyone who wants a traditional German Christmas atmosphere in a city with real architecture. Go on a weekday afternoon to avoid the crush, bring cash for small stalls, and dress warmly. Because the 2027 dates are not yet confirmed, avoid prepaying non-refundable travel until the official calendar is published.
