What Wacken Open Air is

Wacken Open Air is a heavy metal festival held in the village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, in the north of Germany. It has grown from a small local event in 1990 into one of the best-known metal festivals in the world, drawing fans from many countries to a rural area otherwise known for farmland. The planner lists the 2028 edition from Wednesday 2 August to Saturday 5 August 2028.

The festival is more than concerts. Fans camp on the surrounding fields and treat the whole village as part of the event, which is why people often describe it as a pilgrimage rather than a normal festival visit.

How the dates are set, and why 2028 is an estimate

The festival is held every year in late July or early August, from Wednesday to Saturday. The 2028 date has not been announced, so the dates in the planner are an estimate. The status is therefore estimated, and the real dates could fall a week earlier or later.

If you are considering Wacken, do not book travel, time off or accommodation on the basis of this planner alone. Check the festival's official website for the confirmed date, the ticket sale phases and the camping rules.

Character and atmosphere

Wacken has a strong community identity, and its fans call themselves Metalheads. The village decorates its streets, local people open their gardens and the mood is friendly even when the music is loud. The festival has also created recurring features, such as themed areas on the grounds.

Weather is part of the legend. Rain can turn the fields into mud, and experienced visitors plan for it with waterproof clothing and sturdy boots. Plan for both sun and heavy rain, as northern German weather can change quickly.

What to see, do and eat

The core of the festival is the music across several stages, from big headliner slots to smaller stages for newer bands. Beyond the music, there are market areas, themed zones and activities, and the village itself invites a walk.

Food is mostly festival fare: sausages, burgers, fries, noodle dishes and a wide range of drinks. Many campers bring their own supplies for the campsite and supplement them with stall food. Bring a refillable bottle, sun protection and hearing protection, because the volume levels are high.

Getting there and where to stay

Wacken lies in the district of Steinburg, roughly an hour north-west of Hamburg by road. The nearest larger town with a railway station is Itzehoe, and shuttle services usually connect stations to the grounds. Check the organiser's transport page for the current arrangement.

Most visitors camp. If you prefer a bed, rooms in the area are scarce during the festival and are often booked a year ahead, so look at accommodation in Hamburg, Itzehoe or Neumünster instead, and calculate the daily travel time.

Holidays and vacation days in August 2028

The estimated dates run from Wednesday 2 August to Saturday 5 August 2028. Schleswig-Holstein has no public holiday in August, so there is no bridge day. The nearest holidays are Reformation Day on Tuesday 31 October 2028 and German Unity Day on Tuesday 3 October.

Attending the full festival from Wednesday to Saturday costs three vacation days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday), as Saturday is a weekend day. Arriving early on Tuesday 1 August to set up camp, which many campers do, adds a fourth day. A Thursday to Saturday visit takes two days. All of this depends on the real dates and on when the campsite opens.

Tips and who it suits

Wacken suits heavy metal fans, people who enjoy camping and visitors who like a big shared experience. It is not for anyone who needs comfort, quiet or reliable dry weather. It is also a poor fit for travellers who want to decide at the last minute, since tickets have tended to sell out early in past years.

Prepare for mud and rain, pack ear protection and keep documents and phones in waterproof cases. Wait for official confirmation of the 2028 date before you commit to flights, trains or leave.
