What CANALETTO is

CANALETTO, das Dresdner Stadtfest, is the state capital's big summer festival, held on both banks of the Elbe and annually since 1991. The name honours the painter Bernardo Bellotto, who worked in Dresden under the name Canaletto and left famous views of the city. The festival turns the riverside and the old and new town into a stage for music, food and entertainment.

In 2026 it took place from 14 to 16 August; this entry looks ahead to 2027.

Date in 2027 and status

The planner shows Friday 13 August to Sunday 15 August 2027 and marks it as estimated. The projection follows the usual pattern of a mid-August weekend, and 2027's pattern is a shift of one day earlier than 2026. The date has not been confirmed for 2027, and the organiser or the city may set it differently. Check the official source before booking.

Programme details, stage line-ups and any traffic changes are announced closer to the date.

Character

A city festival of this kind is broad rather than specialised. You will find music stages, family areas, food and drink stands, and entertainment, spread through the centre and along the river. The crowds are local and regional, so the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. The setting, with the baroque skyline across the river, is the real attraction.

Because it runs over a summer weekend, evenings tend to be the liveliest and warmest time.

What to see, do and eat

Use the day for the old town: the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Brühl Terrace, then walk across the Augustus Bridge towards the Neustadt. A ride on one of Dresden's historic paddle steamers is a classic summer plan, with the departure times best checked in advance. Festival stalls serve Bratwurst, fish rolls and beer, and a slice of Eierschecke is easy to find at cafes.

If you want a quieter hour, walk or cycle along the Elbe meadows, which stay open and free of the festival crowd.

Getting there and where to stay

Trains reach Dresden Hauptbahnhof from Berlin and Leipzig, and trams run through the centre. During the festival some streets and bridges can be closed to traffic, so public transport or walking is easier than driving. Hotels near the centre are in demand on summer weekends, so book early and look at the Neustadt as an alternative.

Ask your hotel about noise levels if you want to sleep early, as stages can run late.

Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027

There is no public holiday in Saxony in mid-August 2027. The estimated weekend is Friday 13 to Sunday 15 August, so the festival costs a single vacation day, Friday 13 August, to arrive for the evening. Assumption Day on 15 August is not a public holiday in Saxony, and in 2027 it falls on a Sunday anyway.

The next holiday in Saxony is German Unity Day on Sunday 3 October, and Reformation Day on Sunday 31 October, both on weekends in 2027. Saxon summer school holidays may overlap with the festival, so confirm the dates with the Saxon education ministry.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits groups of friends, couples and families with children who enjoy open-air crowds. Bring sun protection, a small bag and cash, and plan where to meet if you get separated. As the 2027 date is estimated, wait for the official announcement before paying for non-refundable travel.
