What gamescom is
gamescom is one of the world's largest trade fairs for video games, held at the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds in Cologne. It brings together publishers, studios, hardware makers, indie developers and a very large public audience who come to try upcoming games, watch live shows and meet creators. The planner lists the 2028 edition for Monday 21 August to Sunday 27 August 2028.
That range is a placeholder for the week, not an official event window. The fair itself usually concentrates its public days on a few days, and trade and press visitors arrive earlier, so the full week in the planner is best read as the period around which to build a trip.
How the dates are set, and why they are an estimate
gamescom takes place in Cologne every year in late August. The 2028 date has not been officially announced, and the week listed here is an estimate based on the pattern of 2027. That is why the status is estimated: nobody has published opening hours, ticket phases or the exact public days for this edition.
In recent years the fair has run from a Wednesday to a Sunday, preceded by an opening evening show. If 2028 follows that rhythm, the public days would fall within 23 to 27 August 2028, but that is an inference, not a fact. Please check the organiser's website for the official date before booking travel or hotels that cannot be cancelled.
Character of the fair
gamescom began in Cologne in 2009 and has become a fixture in the games calendar. It mixes business meetings with a consumer show, so the halls hold both quiet appointment areas and noisy, queue-heavy demo stations. The city joins in with outdoor events and a lively atmosphere around the exhibition centre.
Cologne has been a Messe city for a very long time, and the trade-fair grounds are on the east side of the Rhine in Deutz, close to the main attractions of the city centre. That makes it easy to combine the fair with a few hours of sightseeing.
What to see, do and eat
Inside, expect large publisher booths, playable demos, indie areas, hardware displays and stage shows. Queues for the most anticipated titles can be long, so plan to see a short list of priorities rather than everything. Bring comfortable shoes, a power bank and water, since days on the show floor are long.
Outside the halls, Cologne offers the cathedral, the Rhine promenade and the old town. Typical local food includes Kölsch beer served in thin glasses, Reibekuchen, and Himmel un Ääd, a dish of black pudding with apple and mashed potato. Brewery taverns in the old town are a good place to rest after a day on foot.
Getting there and where to stay
Cologne is a major rail hub, with fast connections to Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Brussels and Amsterdam, and Cologne Bonn Airport is a short ride from the centre. The fairground has its own station in Deutz, so the last part of the trip by train is very short.
Hotels in Cologne rise steeply in price during large fairs and often sell out. If you want to avoid that, look at nearby cities such as Düsseldorf, Bonn or Leverkusen, which are linked by regional trains, and book early once the official dates are published.
Holidays and vacation days in 2028
The listed week is Monday 21 August to Sunday 27 August 2028. North Rhine-Westphalia has no public holiday in that period, and the next ones, German Unity Day on Tuesday 3 October and All Saints' Day on Wednesday 1 November, are far away, so no bridge-day effect applies.
A visit to the fair on Wednesday to Friday would take three vacation days, and a full working week from Monday to Friday would take five. If the public days include the weekend, as in recent years, a Friday to Sunday trip takes only one day. Because the real dates are unconfirmed, count your leave only after the organiser publishes them.
Tips and who it suits
gamescom suits gamers, developers, content creators and anyone who wants to see upcoming releases first hand. It is less suited to visitors who dislike crowds and noise, or to families with very young children, because queues and stand-up days are demanding.
Buy tickets only from the official organiser once sales begin, and check the entry rules for bags and for age limits on certain demos. Treat the dates in this planner as provisional until the official announcement arrives.
