What the Cologne Christmas markets are
Cologne does not have one Christmas market but several, each with its own location and mood. In 2026 the Cathedral market, the Neumarkt market and the Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz open on 16 November and run to 23 December. A few markets run longer: the harbour market opens on 13 November and ends on 3 January 2027, and the Old Town market runs from 23 November to 10 January 2027.
This edition is confirmed, which means the dates come from published information rather than from a rule or a guess. Even so, opening hours and special evenings are set by each market, so look at the individual market's page when you plan a specific day.
How the 2026 calendar fits together
The planner window runs from Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. The weekdays matter here. The main markets open on a Monday and close on a Wednesday, so the season includes five full weekends, and the first Advent Sunday is on 29 November.
Totensonntag, the Sunday before the first Advent, is 22 November 2026. Some German cities hold back their opening until after that day, but the Cologne markets in this list open earlier, so you can visit in the quieter pre-Advent days when crowds are smaller.
Character of the markets
The market at the cathedral is the best known, with the great Gothic building as a backdrop. The Neumarkt market and the Nikolausdorf are more local in feel, the harbour market sits near the Rhine in the Rheinau harbour with a maritime theme, and the Old Town market spreads through the narrow streets near the river.
That variety is the main reason to visit more than one. A single evening can take you from a busy, tourist-heavy square to a quieter neighbourhood market, so you can match the market to your mood, whether you want a spectacle or a calm mulled wine.
What to see, do and eat
Walk between markets and add the cathedral itself, the Rhine promenade and the old town to your route. Stalls sell handicrafts, ornaments, candles and gifts, and the evenings are lit with lights and music. The harbour market is a good choice if you like a waterside setting.
On the food side, expect mulled wine, Reibekuchen with apple sauce, roasted almonds and sausages. A glass of Kölsch in a traditional brewery house after the market is a typical Cologne way to warm up, and local gingerbread and sweets make easy souvenirs.
Getting there and where to stay
Cologne's main station stands directly next to the cathedral, so arriving by train puts you at the most famous market within a few steps. The city has fast links to Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Brussels and Amsterdam, and Cologne Bonn Airport is a short ride away.
Hotel prices rise during Advent weekends and sell out early, so book soon if you want a central room. Neighbouring cities like Düsseldorf, Bonn or Leverkusen are fallback options on the regional rail network.
Holidays and vacation days in 2026
North Rhine-Westphalia has no public holiday between All Saints' Day on 1 November and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, so there is no bridge day inside the market window. Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, is not a public holiday either, and the main markets have already closed on 23 December.
A weekend visit from Friday to Sunday costs one vacation day or none if you travel after work on Friday. A weekday trip from Monday 16 to Friday 20 November would take five days, while a long weekend from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November, including the first Advent Sunday, takes one. Those last days before Christmas, 21 to 23 December, would take three days and are usually busy with last-minute shoppers.
Tips and who it suits
The Cologne markets suit couples, groups of friends, families and visitors who combine them with a city break. They are less suited to anyone who dislikes crowds, because Saturday evenings and Advent weekends can be very full around the cathedral.
Go on a weekday afternoon or early in the season for more space. Wear warm layers and comfortable shoes for cobbles, carry some cash for small stands, and check the individual market pages for opening times and any entrance arrangements.
