What the Halle Lantern Festival is

The Hallesches Laternenfest is the big summer city festival of Halle (Saale), held along the river around the Peißnitz island and the Ziegelwiese meadow. According to the event data it brings together lanterns on the water and in the parks, a fireworks display, a duck race, fairground rides and stage programmes. It is a festival for locals first, and for visitors who like riverside festivals at the end of summer.

For 2026 the data gives 28 to 30 August. The 2027 entry that this page describes is an estimate built on that pattern. It is not yet an organiser announcement.

Dates in 2027 and how reliable they are

The planner shows Friday 27 August to Sunday 29 August 2027, the last full weekend of August. That is one day earlier in the calendar than in 2026, which keeps the same weekday pattern of a Friday start. The status is estimated, so the weekend could still move, especially if the city has to coordinate it with other events on the Peißnitz or with the end of the school holidays.

Before you book travel, look at the official festival page or the city of Halle. Late bookings are possible, but the better hotel rooms near the river go quickly on a festival weekend.

Festival character and the city of Halle

Halle is the biggest city of Saxony-Anhalt and a university town with a lively student scene. Its Marktplatz is dominated by the Roter Turm, the red tower, and the Marktkirche with its four towers. George Frideric Handel was born here, and the Händel-Haus museum tells his story. The Franckesche Stiftungen, a large Pietist foundation, form a distinct historic district, and the Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte houses the Nebra Sky Disc.

The Laternenfest brings the river into the foreground. In the evening the lanterns, boats and illuminated paths along the Saale give the park islands a much softer feeling than the usual big-city festival, and the fireworks over the water are the highlight for many people.

What to eat, see and do

Besides the usual festival fare, try the Hallorenkugeln, the chocolate balls from the local Halloren factory, which are a typical souvenir of the city. Halle also has a good beer garden culture along the Saale, and restaurants near the Moritzburg and the Giebichenstein castle serve regional food.

Plan a daytime walk to Burg Giebichenstein and the art school that sits below it, then move to the Peißnitz for the evening. With a second day, visit the Händel-Haus, the Franckesche Stiftungen or take a regional train to Leipzig, which is a short ride away.

Getting there and where to stay

Halle Hauptbahnhof has fast connections to Berlin, Leipzig, Erfurt and Magdeburg, and local trams run to the river. Hotels in the centre and near the station are the easiest choice because you can walk or take the tram to the festival grounds. Leipzig also has a wider choice of rooms if Halle is full.

Cars are possible but the roads around the Peißnitz are usually busy during the festival, so leave the vehicle at the hotel.

Public holidays and bridge days in Saxony-Anhalt, 2027

The estimated festival runs Friday 27 to Sunday 29 August 2027. There is no public holiday in Saxony-Anhalt near these days. The next one is Reformation Day on 31 October, which falls on a Sunday in 2027, and the last one before the festival was Whit Monday on 17 May. So there is no bridge day to use.

A Friday arrival costs at most one vacation day, or none if you come after work. If you want to turn the festival into a longer trip, add Thursday 26 August and Monday 30 August for two days and use the time for Leipzig, the Saale valley or the Unstrut wine region, which is not far from Halle.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits families, couples and groups of friends who like a relaxed riverside atmosphere, and it is convenient for visitors from Leipzig, Berlin and Thuringia who want an easy weekend trip.

Bring a light jacket for the evening, expect crowds near the fireworks and do not rely on the estimated dates until the organiser confirms them.
