What Christmas Eve means in Germany
In Germany, Christmas Eve, called Heiligabend, is the main evening of the Christmas celebration, more central for most families than Christmas Day itself. Gifts are traditionally exchanged on the evening of 24 December, a custom known as Bescherung, often after a church service or a family meal. In the planner this is a single-day entry with nationwide scope.
In 2026 Heiligabend falls on a Thursday. It is not a statutory public holiday, but it is treated as a special day throughout the country, and most people expect to spend the evening with family.
Status of the date
The date is rule-based and fixed: 24 December every year, so Thursday 24 December 2026. There is no uncertainty about the day itself. What varies from year to year is how the surrounding days fall on the calendar, and 2026 has a particularly useful shape for planning leave.
What is less fixed is your employer's practice. Many employers give a half or full day off, others expect normal working hours, and collective agreements differ. Check your contract or ask your employer, because there is no general legal entitlement.
Customs and character
Typical customs include a decorated tree, a church service on the afternoon or late evening, and a family meal. Common dishes are potato salad with sausages, carp, goose or other roasts, depending on region and family tradition.
The day has a hushed tempo. Shops close early, traffic eases after the afternoon, and cities become quiet by evening. Many people consider it the most private evening of the year.
What to do and eat
If you are travelling, check opening hours in advance. Many supermarkets close around midday or early afternoon on 24 December, and most Christmas markets have already ended on 23 December in the previous days. Restaurants usually run special menus or close.
Attending a church service, taking a winter walk or visiting a museum that is open in the morning are common ways to spend the day. In larger cities there are late-night services, and some places host concerts.
Travel around Christmas Eve
Long-distance trains and motorways are busy on the days before Christmas, particularly on Wednesday 23 and the morning of Thursday 24 December. Seat reservations are advisable on the main rail routes, and flights can be fully booked.
Public transport often runs on a reduced timetable on the evening of 24 December and on both holidays. Plan return journeys so that you are not stranded, and check the last services in your region.
Public holidays and vacation days in 2026
The weekdays in 2026 are Thursday 24 December, Friday 25 December (first Christmas Day) and Saturday 26 December (second Christmas Day), both holidays in every German state. New Year's Eve, 31 December, is a Thursday, and New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027. Neither 24 nor 31 December is a statutory holiday.
To get a nine-day break from Saturday 19 December to Sunday 27 December, take Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December, and 24 December if your employer does not already close, so three or four vacation days. To extend that to a 16-day block through Sunday 3 January 2027, add Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 December and 31 December, which brings the total to six or eight vacation days. The count falls if your employer gives 24 and 31 December off.
Tips and who it suits
Plan the year-end break early, as popular travel dates and family visits are arranged months ahead. If you stay home, buy food before midday on 24 December and confirm shop hours.
This entry is mainly useful for planning leave and travel. It suits employees who want to bridge to the new year, families arranging visits, and anyone checking when shops, markets and public transport will be available.
