Kiel Week 2028 at a glance

Kiel Week is the summer festival of the Schleswig-Holstein capital, built around international sailing regattas on the Kiel Fjord and a huge free street festival on land. The planner lists the 2028 edition from Saturday 17 June to Sunday 25 June 2028, nine days that end on the last weekend of the month.

This is an estimate. There is no announcement for 2028 yet, so the dates follow the traditional pattern rather than a published programme. If you are thinking about it this far ahead, treat the dates as a planning guide.

Where the 2028 dates come from

The festival traditionally closes on the last weekend of June and runs for nine days from a Saturday. In 2028 the last weekend of June falls on 24 and 25 June, so counting back the opening Saturday is 17 June. The planner therefore shows the week as 17 to 25 June.

Please note this is a pattern, not an announcement. The city and organisers decide the final schedule, and they could in principle shift by a week. Once they publish dates, usually well before summer, update your plans accordingly.

History and character

The festival began as a sailing event in the 1880s and grew into a broad city celebration. Alongside the racing, Kiel hosts international crews, a harbour crowded with boats of all sizes and a stage programme that mixes local bands with larger acts.

The city, rebuilt after the Second World War, is a working harbour, a university town and a base for the German navy, and that maritime identity shows during the festival. Visitors will see sailing boats, ferries and large ships on the same fjord.

What to see, do and eat

The core experience is the waterfront. Walk the promenade, watch the regattas from the shore or join a harbour boat trip, then wander the market streets with their stalls and music stages. If the tradition holds, a large parade of sailing ships is one of the highlights of the closing weekend, but the schedule needs to be checked.

Eat fish rolls, smoked fish and, if you like, Kiel sprats, then try something from the international food stalls. Beer gardens near the harbour are a pleasant place to end the day when the evenings are long.

Getting there and where to stay

The railway station and the ferry terminals are both close to the centre. Regional trains link Kiel with Hamburg and Lübeck, and long-distance connections run via Hamburg. Parking is hard to find on festival days, so arriving by train is the practical choice.

Book a room early once the festival dates are confirmed. If Kiel is full, nearby towns on the Baltic coast or the larger cities of Hamburg and Lübeck offer more choice, though they require a daily commute.

Holidays and vacation days in June 2028

In 2028 the opening Saturday is 17 June and the closing Sunday is 25 June. Whit Sunday falls on 4 June and Whit Monday on 5 June, well before the festival, and Schleswig-Holstein has no public holiday between those dates and the summer. There is no bridge day in the window.

A weekend only, Saturday 17 to Sunday 18 June, needs no vacation days. A full stay for all nine days uses the five weekdays from Monday 19 to Friday 23 June. A midweek visit from Wednesday 21 to Friday 23 June takes three days, and a long weekend Friday 23 to Sunday 25 June takes one. Compare school holiday dates for 2028 before booking.

Tips and who it suits

The festival suits people who enjoy water, boats and large outdoor events, including families who want free entertainment. It is a weaker choice for anyone wanting a calm weekend, and the closing weekend is the busiest.

Pack layers and rain protection for the coast, and aim to see the harbour in daylight and the music stages in the evening. Because the status is estimated, avoid fixed bookings until the organisers confirm the 2028 programme.
