About the Wave-Gotik-Treffen
The Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT) is a long-running gathering of the dark-wave, goth and related scenes, held in Leipzig over Pentecost every year since 1992. Concerts, readings, markets and parties fill venues across the city, and the festival is regarded as the largest of its kind in the world.
This entry covers 2028. Unlike the 2027 edition, nothing about the 2028 programme or ticketing has been published yet.
2028 dates and why they are not confirmed
The planner shows Friday 2 June to Monday 5 June 2028 and marks the status as rule-based. That means the dates come from the festival's tradition of running from Friday to Monday over Pentecost: Pentecost Sunday 2028 is 4 June, Whit Monday 5 June. The organisers have not yet announced 2028, and the programme has not been published. A shift is unlikely if the tradition holds, but it is not guaranteed, so do not buy non-refundable travel before the official announcement.
Check the festival's official website for ticket sale dates, which usually come well before the event.
Character
The festival is known as friendly and creative, with a large number of attendees in elaborate costume. It mixes music of many styles with markets, literature, theatre and a pagan village. Visitors who simply want to watch the colourful crowd can do so around the city centre, while ticket holders enter specific venues.
For many fans it is an annual meeting point, so a lot of visitors return year after year and arrange accommodation a long time ahead.
What to see, do and eat
Besides the shows, take time for Leipzig itself: the Nikolaikirche, the Thomaskirche, the old town passages and the large Monument to the Battle of the Nations. Saxon food such as Bratwurst, Leipziger Allerlei and Eierschecke is easy to find. Early June usually brings long evenings, which suit outdoor concerts and picnics.
Because events are spread across the city, plan clusters of venues close together, and leave buffer time for tram journeys.
Getting there and where to stay
By train, Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is the gateway, with frequent connections from Berlin, Dresden, Erfurt and Frankfurt. On Pentecost weekend, long-distance trains are busy, so reserve a seat. Local tram and bus passes simplify moving between venues.
Rooms are scarce. If hotels are full, look at nearby towns with regional train links, or at camping options the organisers list. Book early and keep an eye on cancellation terms while the 2028 dates are unconfirmed.
Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2028
Whit Monday 5 June 2028 is a public holiday in Saxony, so the Friday to Monday trip costs a single vacation day, Friday 2 June. Ascension Day falls on Thursday 25 May, with a bridge day on Friday 26 May. Corpus Christi is Thursday 15 June, a holiday only in a few Saxon communities and not in Leipzig.
For a five-day trip starting Thursday 1 June, take Thursday and Friday, two days. If you want a long spring break, you could combine Ascension and Pentecost, but the weeks between are working weeks, so such a plan costs more days; compute it against your own leave.
Tips and who it suits
WGT suits people who love the scene and also curious first-timers. Wait for the official announcement before committing, then secure tickets and lodging in the same week. Pack for changeable weather, bring cash, and use the organisers' own information as the source of truth.
