Cologne's Christmas markets in 2027

Cologne's Christmas season is spread across several markets in different parts of the city, rather than one single event. The planner window for 2027 runs from Monday 15 November to Thursday 23 December 2027, covering the period in which the large markets usually operate.

This edition is an estimate. No 2027 dates have been published, and the window is derived from the 2026 pattern. Use it as a guide to when the season is likely to run, and look for the official announcements, which usually appear in the autumn, before you commit to travel.

How the dates are likely to work

The large Cologne markets usually open in mid-November and end on 23 December. In 2027 the window begins on a Monday and ends on a Thursday. The weekend before Christmas is 18 and 19 December, which makes it the last weekend with all main markets open if the pattern holds.

Totensonntag, the Sunday before the first Advent, is 21 November 2027, and the first Advent Sunday is 28 November. A few markets, such as harbour and Old Town markets, tend to run beyond Christmas into the new year, but nothing about 2027 is confirmed, so do not plan around a specific closing date yet.

History and character

Cologne's Christmas markets are part of a long German tradition of Advent markets, and the city is known for presenting them in a mix of settings: in front of the cathedral, on large squares, in the Old Town and by the Rhine harbour. Each has a distinct atmosphere, from grand and busy to cosy and local.

The cathedral backdrop is the signature image, but many regulars prefer the smaller markets for their quieter evenings. Spreading a visit over more than one market is the best way to understand the range.

What to see, do and eat

Besides the stalls, build in time for the cathedral, a walk along the Rhine and a look at the old town's lanes. Markets sell handmade gifts, decorations and seasonal food, and many have stage programmes in the evenings.

Typical treats are mulled wine, fried potato pancakes with apple sauce, roasted almonds and Bratwurst. For a sit-down meal, traditional brewery houses serve Kölsch and regional dishes in a warm, noisy setting that suits a cold evening.

Getting there and where to stay

The main station is next to the cathedral, so a train journey ends close to the main market. Fast trains link Cologne with Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Brussels and Amsterdam. Local trams and buses reach the other market squares easily.

Rooms near the centre sell out for Advent weekends. Once the markets confirm their dates, book early, and consider staying in nearby cities if prices are high. Check the last train times for the way back.

Holidays and vacation days in 2027

In 2027 Christmas Eve falls on Friday 24 December, and Christmas Day and Boxing Day are Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 December. Since both holidays fall on a weekend, North Rhine-Westphalia gets no extra weekday off that year. No public holiday lies inside the market window itself, because All Saints' Day on 1 November is two weeks earlier.

A long weekend from Friday 19 November to Sunday 21 November takes one vacation day. A week from Monday 6 to Friday 10 December takes five days. A trip ending on the estimated last day, Thursday 23 December, would take one or two days depending on when you start, and those days are very busy with last-minute holiday travel.

Tips and who it suits

The markets suit couples, friends, families and city-break travellers. They are less comfortable for anyone with mobility needs on the busiest evenings, or for people who prefer quiet, because the cathedral surroundings fill up quickly.

Because this edition is only an estimate, wait for the official dates before booking non-refundable travel. Once they are published, a weekday visit in the first week of the season is usually the calmest way to see the markets.
