What the Leipzig Christmas Market is

The Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt is billed as Germany's second oldest Christmas market, documented since 1458. It is not one square but several market areas spread across the city centre, around the Markt, the old town hall and the pedestrian streets that link them. The result is a market you walk through as much as one you visit, with a different mood in each pocket.

Leipzig itself adds a lot: a trade-fair and university city with a strong musical tradition, where Advent concerts are part of the season.

Dates in 2027 and what is confirmed

The planner shows the 2027 market from Tuesday 23 November to Thursday 23 December and marks it as estimated. In plain words: no official 2027 announcement exists yet, and the window is projected from the pattern of the most recent edition and the city tourism office's press material. Opening and closing dates, and daily opening hours, are published later by the organisers. Before you book rail or hotel with a non-refundable rate, check the Leipzig tourism pages.

Note that the planned end, Thursday 23 December, is the day before Christmas Eve, so the market does not run into the holiday itself.

History and character

The market's documented history reaches back to 1458, which makes it older than most in the country, and over the centuries it has moved with the city's growth. Today it is organised around themed areas, and the atmosphere mixes stalls selling crafts and food with larger attractions, which families tend to like. The surrounding old-town architecture, the covered passages and the churches are a natural frame.

Leipzig is also the city of Johann Sebastian Bach's Thomaskirche, and Advent and Christmas concerts in the churches are a draw in their own right. Check the church schedules for 2027.

What to see, do and eat

Walk the lit lanes around the Markt, try mulled wine and roasted almonds and look for Saxon baked goods. The Leipziger Lerche is a local pastry of shortcrust with marzipan and cherry jam, and Eierschecke is the classic Saxon cake with a quark and custard layer. For something savoury, Bratwurst and potato dishes are everywhere, and Leipziger Allerlei, a vegetable dish, is a regional main course.

Between market visits, the Thomaskirche, the Nikolaikirche and the historic passages such as Mädlerpassage are easy to reach on foot. Cafés in the old town are a good retreat when the cold bites.

Getting there and where to stay

Leipzig Hauptbahnhof is a major rail hub with direct services from Berlin, Dresden, Frankfurt and many other cities, and the market is a short walk away. Driving into the city on market evenings is not recommended; use rail or park outside the centre and take the tram. Hotels near the centre fill up on Advent weekends, so book early.

Staying in a neighbourhood outside the ring and travelling in by tram is usually calmer and easier on the budget.

Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2027

The dates make for a simple calendar. The Buß- und Bettag, a public holiday in Saxony, is Wednesday 17 November 2027, six days before the planned opening, so it does not fall inside the market window. During the market there is no weekday public holiday in Saxony: 25 and 26 December are Saturday and Sunday, after the planned close.

A Friday to Sunday trip over the first Advent weekend, 26 to 28 November, costs one vacation day. A four-day trip from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 December costs two. Because 24 December falls on a Friday, you could combine the market's last days with the Christmas break: take Friday 24 and Monday 27 to Friday 31 December, six days, for ten days off until Sunday 2 January 2028.

Tips and who it suits

The market suits couples and groups who like walking, families who want activities, and music lovers combining it with a church concert. Go on weekday evenings to escape crowds, wear shoes for cobbles and bring a little cash. Because the 2027 dates are estimated, do not commit to non-refundable plans until the organisers publish the schedule.
