What the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market is

The WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt is a Christmas market on one of Berlin's most beautiful squares, framed by the German Cathedral, the French Cathedral and the Konzerthaus. Our event data describes it as Berlin's most upscale Christmas market. The 2026 edition is listed as confirmed, from Monday 23 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, which makes it one of the longer-running markets in the city.

Entry requires a ticket, according to the event data, which sets it apart from Berlin's many free markets. In exchange it tends to be calmer. The dates are confirmed, but opening hours, ticket categories and special days such as 24 December are set by the organiser, so check the official page shortly before you go.

Dates and the calendar in 2026

The market opens on a Monday, 23 November, six days before the first Sunday of Advent on 29 November. It then runs beyond Christmas and closes on Thursday 31 December, New Year's Eve. This makes it one of the few Berlin markets you can still visit between Christmas and New Year.

The Advent weekends are 28 and 29 November, 5 and 6 December, 12 and 13 December, and 19 and 20 December. Christmas Day is a Friday and Boxing Day a Saturday in 2026. Since a ticket is needed, there are fewer crowd surges than at free markets, but weekend evenings are still the busiest.

Character and setting

The setting is the main attraction. The two domed churches stand on either side of the Konzerthaus, with the Schiller monument in the middle of the square, and the market stalls are arranged around them. Lights, wooden huts and decorations make a coherent look, and the evening atmosphere is the best part.

The market is known for craft stalls with higher-quality goods, plus a stage programme with music. The details of the programme vary from year to year, so check the official site. Compared with the busy Alexanderplatz market or the Charlottenburg Palace market, the Gendarmenmarkt is more compact and more elegant.

Food, drink and nearby sights

Berlin Christmas markets offer Glühwein, Bratwurst, roast almonds, Lebkuchen and waffles, and at an upscale market you also find regional specialities and gourmet stalls. We do not quote prices, which change each year and depend on the stall.

Within walking distance, you can see the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, the Berlin Cathedral and the Museum Island. The Friedrichstraße shopping district is next to the square. In winter, plan indoor stops in museums or cafés to warm up between market visits.

Getting there and where to stay

The Gendarmenmarkt is in central Berlin and is served by U-Bahn stations Stadtmitte and Französische Straße, both a short walk away. Berlin's main station has long-distance links to Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Leipzig and Dresden, and a regional or S-Bahn connection takes you to the centre.

Central hotels in Mitte are in high demand in December. Book early, especially for the weekend before Christmas and around New Year. Staying in another district with a good S-Bahn connection is a cheaper alternative.

Public holidays, bridge days and vacation days in Berlin

The market runs across the Christmas and New Year period, which makes holiday planning interesting. In Berlin, 25 December 2026 is a Friday and 26 December a Saturday, so the only weekday holiday is Friday 25 December. New Year's Day 2027 is also a Friday. Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and New Year's Eve (Thursday 31 December) are normal working days, although many employers close early.

A long Christmas break from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 3 January 2027 would cost 5 vacation days (24 December and 28 to 31 December), because 25 December and 1 January are public holidays and the rest are weekends. A shorter trip over the first Advent weekend, Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November, costs at most 1 vacation day.

Tips and who it suits

The market suits couples, small groups and visitors who prefer a calm, elegant atmosphere to a loud one. It may be less suitable for families on a tight budget because of the entrance fee, and for people who want free fairground attractions.

Check the ticket rules and opening times on the official site, and book a time slot if offered. Dress warmly, because the open square is cold in the evening, and consider pairing the market with a visit to a concert at the Konzerthaus, which has a December programme that you can check on its own website.
