About the Striezelmarkt
The Dresdner Striezelmarkt is held on the Altmarkt in Dresden and is described as Germany's oldest documented Christmas market, with a first mention dating to 1434. Its landmark is a very large walk-through Christmas pyramid. If you want a Christmas market with real depth of tradition and a city that is easy to combine with sightseeing, this is one of the standard picks in Saxony.
Visitors come for the hand-crafted goods from the Erzgebirge, for Dresden Stollen and for the lights and music that fill the square after dark.
2028 dates and status
For 2028 the planner shows an estimated run from Wednesday 29 November to Sunday 24 December. The status is estimated, which means no official announcement for that year exists yet. The window is derived from earlier editions and the city's published market notice. Compared with 2027 it starts five days later and closes on a Sunday, so the calendar shape is quite different, and the date of the Advent weekends shifts too: the first Advent Sunday is 3 December 2028.
Confirm the period and daily hours on the official city pages before you reserve anything. On Christmas Eve, a Sunday in 2028, expect shortened hours or an early close.
History and atmosphere
The market's early centuries were tied to the Saxon court, and the name Striezel refers to a festive loaf eaten at Christmas. This gives the market a strongly regional flavour: much of what is sold can be traced to Saxon or Erzgebirge craft. The Dresden Stollen has protected regional status, and Dresden has a Stollen festival in the market period; the date is announced by the organisers, and for 2028 you should expect it to sit in early December.
Because the 2028 market opens as a Wednesday, the first weekend is the Advent weekend of 2 and 3 December, usually the busiest early point.
What to see, do and eat
Besides the pyramid, look for glass baubles, wooden toys, pottery and candle arches. Try Stollen, roasted almonds, Bratwurst and mulled wine. A cup of hot chocolate near the Frauenkirche, a walk across the Augustusbrücke to see the old town lit up, and a visit to the Zwinger courtyard in the early dark make a good evening. Check the Kreuzkirche programme for Advent music.
On Sundays, many museums in Dresden remain open, which gives you a rainy-day plan; confirm opening hours directly.
Getting there and staying
The simplest route is by train to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and then the tram or a walk to the Altmarkt. Leipzig and Berlin have good rail links, and driving is less pleasant on market evenings. Hotels near the centre sell out on Advent weekends, so book early.
For a calmer stay, look at the Neustadt or the neighbourhoods along tram lines, which put you ten to twenty minutes from the market.
Holidays and bridge days in Saxony, 2028
In 2028 the Buß- und Bettag, a Saxon public holiday, falls on Wednesday 22 November, a week before the market opens. Reformation Day, 31 October, is a Tuesday, outside the window. During the market there is no weekday public holiday in Saxony, since 25 December is a Monday, and 26 December a Tuesday, just after the planner's end date.
A Friday-to-Sunday trip over the first Advent weekend, Friday 1 to Sunday 3 December, costs one vacation day. The closing Sunday 24 December pairs well with the holidays: take Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 December, three days, and you are off from Saturday 23 December until Monday 1 January 2029, ten days in a row.
Tips and who it suits
This market suits couples, families with children and visitors who enjoy history. Go in the late afternoon to see both daylight and lights, avoid Saturday evenings if you dislike crowds, and carry some cash. Since the 2028 dates are only estimated, hold off on non-refundable bookings until the official period is announced.
