Magdeburg's Advent market in 2028

Magdeburg's Christmas market is described in the event data as the largest in Saxony-Anhalt. It fills the Alter Markt in front of the old town hall and adds a light installation around the cathedral, so that the Gothic towers of the Dom become the backdrop for the whole evening. For a regional capital it is a surprisingly generous market, with a stage, rides for children and a good number of food and craft stalls.

The 2028 entry is a forecast. It rests on the length and pattern of recent seasons rather than on a city announcement, so please use it to compare options and not as a confirmed timetable.

Estimated dates and what the status means

The planner lists Thursday 23 November to Friday 29 December 2028. Its status is estimated, which means nothing official has been published yet. Compared with the 2027 forecast, the start is five days later in the calendar, because the first Advent Sunday falls on 3 December 2028, and the Sunday of the dead is 26 November.

The roughly five and a half weeks fit the idea of a market that opens before Advent and runs through Christmas week. Whether the stalls are open on 24, 25 and 26 December is not clear from the data, so check the organiser before you plan a visit in that window.

A city of emperors, canals and modern architecture

Otto the Great chose Magdeburg as one of his main seats, and the cathedral that bears his tomb is a landmark that dominates the skyline over the Elbe. The city was heavily destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt, so you will find a mixture of historic fragments, post-war blocks and contemporary projects instead of a uniform old town.

That mix is part of its charm. Hundertwasser's Green Citadel, the cloister of Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen with its sculpture park and concert hall, and the Elbe promenade offer a different picture from the picture-postcard market towns. The Wasserstraßenkreuz, where a canal bridge crosses the river, is one of the engineering sights of the region.

Eating, drinking and spending an evening

Mulled wine and sausages come first, followed by sweet items such as crepes, roasted almonds and gingerbread. Many visitors treat the market as an evening outing, so the best time for photographs of the lit cathedral is shortly after dusk, which in late November and December is already around the late afternoon.

If you want a seat, plan a dinner in one of the restaurants near the Hasselbachplatz or in the old town and then walk to the market. For a second day, add a museum, the Elbe riverside or a short trip to Halle or Quedlinburg.

Public holidays and bridge days in Saxony-Anhalt, 2028

The season begins on a Thursday and ends on a Friday, covering the weekends of 25 and 26 November, 2 and 3 December, 9 and 10 December, 16 and 17 December, and 23 to 26 December. Because 24 December is a Sunday, Christmas Day is a Monday and Boxing Day is a Tuesday, the festive days fall on weekdays this time.

That creates a real bridge opportunity if the market is open then: taking Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 December costs three vacation days and gives nine days off in a row, from Saturday 23 December to Sunday 31 December. A shorter option is a normal weekend trip, which needs no days or only a Friday. Reformation Day on 31 October 2028 is a Tuesday and comes well before the market, so Monday 30 October is the bridge day for that holiday, not for this event.

Tips and who it suits

The Magdeburg market suits visitors who want a big regional market without the crowds of the most famous German ones, and it is practical for families because the area is compact and well served by trams.

Because the dates are still an estimate, book flexible rooms and keep an eye on the city's announcement in the autumn. Dress for damp cold, and consider a weekday evening visit if you prefer space around the stalls.
