About Schlachte-Zauber in 2028

Schlachte-Zauber is the Christmas market on the Weser promenade in Bremen, a few minutes from the old town. Where the market at the town hall is surrounded by famous buildings, this one trades on its waterside position, with the river, moored ships and the lights of the opposite bank as scenery. It is usually described as a market with a historic or maritime flavour, and the crafts and food reflect that, though the programme can change from year to year.

Our data lists the 2028 edition from Monday 27 November to Saturday 23 December, almost four weeks.

Dates in 2028: estimated, not announced

Nothing has been announced for 2028, so the dates are an estimate. The market usually begins on the Monday after Totensonntag. In 2028 Totensonntag is 26 November, which suggests Monday 27 November, and the habitual end on 23 December lands on a Saturday.

A Saturday finish would give the market a full last weekend, but that is only a consequence of the pattern, not a confirmed plan. Look at Bremen's tourism pages and the organiser's announcement before you book, and choose flexible rates for hotel and train until the dates are published.

What to see and do

Start with a walk along the Schlachte in the afternoon, when you can still see the river and the harbour life. After dark the stalls and the lights make the better picture. From the promenade you can walk to the Marktplatz in a few minutes, where the town hall and the Roland statue stand.

In the old town, the Böttcherstraße, the Schnoor quarter and the Bremen Town Musicians statue are all within walking distance. For an indoor break, Bremen has museums and the cathedral. A winter weekend here is easy to organise, as the distances are short.

Food and drink

Besides the usual mulled wine, roasted almonds and sausages, you can combine the market with northern German food: fish rolls, Labskaus, Kohl und Pinkel and Bremer Klaben. Restaurants and bars on the Schlachte continue to serve in winter. If you want to sit down, book ahead on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Getting there and where to stay

The Schlachte is reachable on foot from the main station in around fifteen to twenty minutes, or by tram and bus. Bremen has regular rail links with Hamburg, Hanover and the Ruhr area, and an airport with a tram connection. The A1 and A27 serve visitors by car, but parking in the centre is limited in December.

Hotels in the old town and along the river are convenient. Advent weekends are the busiest, so reserve early if your dates are fixed, or look at the Viertel district for a lively base with good connections.

Planning around public holidays and bridge days in 2028

There is no Bremen public holiday inside the 2028 window. The nearest are German Unity Day on Tuesday 3 October and Reformation Day on Tuesday 31 October, both well before the market opens. Christmas Day is Monday 25 December and Boxing Day Tuesday 26 December, directly after the market ends on Saturday 23 December.

That makes the final weekend a natural trip, Friday 22 to Saturday 23 December, for one vacation day or none. Pair it with the holidays and take Wednesday 27 to Friday 29 December, three vacation days, and you are off from Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 December, nine days. If Friday 22 December is also a vacation day, the block begins one day earlier, with a trip on Friday and Saturday to the market first. For an earlier visit, a Friday to Sunday in the first weeks costs one day at most.

Tips and who it suits

This market suits couples, friends and visitors who like water views with their mulled wine. Dress for river wind, wear grippy shoes on wet cobbles, and use a card where accepted, with some cash as a backup. Because the 2028 dates are an estimate, confirm them with the organiser before you spend money on non-refundable travel.
